The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Joins Samsung’s Security Calendar

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 took its first software update on Sept. 1, a security-only package 25 days after the Aug. 7 launch. Verizon logged the build as L715USQS1AZH4 and set the Android security patch level to August 2026.

The Watch 9, which launched the same day, had already taken that August patch in South Korea on Aug. 27. The $699 dive watch is now on the same monthly security clock as Galaxy phones, and US owners can read almost none of that clock in the carrier notes.

Verizon Only Promises a Security Patch

Verizon’s System Update 1 notes date the drop to 09/01/2026 and name a single change. The page’s boilerplate still talks about performance, known issues, and new features when they exist. The actual changelog does not.

That is the whole public US list. No battery fix. No sensor note. No One UI Watch extra. The US LTE Ultra 2 is model SM-L715U, and the build string L715USQS1AZH4 is the first Verizon-logged software on that radio.

The same day, Verizon’s software index marked the Galaxy Watch 9 as updated on 09/01/2026. US LTE Watch 9 builds are L355USQS1AZH4 for 44 mm and L345USQS1AZH4 for 40 mm. Wi-Fi Watch 9 units keep the same firmware family; only the model code shifts.

A Korea firmware listing posted Aug. 31 already showed the Ultra 2 on L715NKOS1AZH4, a 221.87MB package, with a security patch level of August 5, 2026. The US file is the same family, about 220MB, which is patch-sized rather than OS-sized.

The Watch 9 Got the August Patch First

Samsung did not start this August round on the new flagship. The Watch 9 in South Korea took the August 2026 patch on Aug. 27, 20 days after launch. The 44 mm non-cellular package was 193.09MB on build L350XXS1AZH4.

Older watches were earlier still. Verizon’s own update index had last touched the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro on Aug. 13, 2026. Watch 7, Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, and last year’s Watch Ultra still showed July 13, 2026 as of that same carrier list.

WHO GOT THE AUGUST PATCH, AND WHEN

By Aug. 28, a 24-device August roundup already named the Watch 9, Watch 5, and Watch 5 Pro beside Galaxy S24, S25, and Z Fold8 phones. The Ultra 2 was not on that list. The $699 watch joined after the $379 sibling, and after a two-year-old Watch 5.

Samsung’s bulletin itself warns that delivery time of security patches may vary depending on the regions and models. This rollout is that sentence in practice. The flagship wrist computer waited in line with everything else that shares the August SMR label.

What the August Bulletin Lists

Samsung published the August 2026 security maintenance release on Aug. 4, 2026, three days before the Ultra 2 went on sale. The package is written for “major flagship models” in the monthly SMR process, with Google patches plus Samsung’s own SVE list.

Google’s August slice on that page is 8 issues marked critical and 30 marked high, which is 38 CVEs. Samsung adds 18 SVE items. That is the 56-issue total other writeups have hung on the watch. Two of those SVEs are high (Weaver can be left inoperable; Galaxy Themes can launch an arbitrary activity). Fourteen more are disclosed as moderate, and two are withheld.

The disclosed August SVEs name phone software: Samsung Contacts, Dialer, Message, Galaxy Themes, AppLock, clipboard, and several media codecs. None of the named August items say Galaxy Watch. Samsung does file watch bugs on this same bulletin in other months. A May entry, SVE-2026-0483, described improper input validation in FacAtFunction on Galaxy Watch that let a local attacker run code with system privilege. August’s public list is not that kind of watch note.

So the honest claim is narrower than “56 watch fixes.” Verizon raised the Ultra 2 to the August 2026 Android security patch level. Samsung’s matching phone SMR contains 56 items, most of them written against phone apps. Until Samsung publishes a watch-specific changelog, those 56 should stay on the phone bulletin.

One UI 9 Watch Already Came in the Box

This first OTA is also small because the big software change already shipped on Aug. 7. The Ultra 2 and Watch 9 launched on Wear OS 7 with One UI 9 Watch. Owners did not need a 2GB file to get the new interface.

Last year’s watches are taking that interface the hard way. In South Korea on Aug. 26, the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic entered a One UI 9 Watch beta on firmware ZZH3. That package weighed 2,010.76MB and carried an August 5, 2026 security patch. Feature work for older hardware is a two-gigabyte beta. The new flagship’s first file is a 221.87MB security stamp.

Samsung still sells the Ultra 2 as its most advanced smartwatch, with an 800 mAh cell, a 1.52-inch panel up to 5,000 nits, a titanium case, IP69K and 10 ATM ratings, and EN13319 dive certification down to 130 feet. Those Galaxy Watch Ultra2 product specs are why people paid $699 (€749). The first update does not add trail tools, dive metrics, or a new watch face. It stamps the August patch onto a watch that already had the new UI.

Quiet firmware tracker posts this week matched that reading: security patch, build AZH4, no new features, rolling in the US and a few other markets. There was almost no owner thread to argue with, because the file does not change the watch you see.

How to Install the Ultra 2 Update

Samsung still pushes watch firmware through the phone. Samsung’s Wearable app update steps ask for a decent charge first. The watch may refuse the job under a 30% battery. Connect the phone and watch, then follow the path below.

INSTALL THE UPDATE FROM YOUR PHONE

1. Charge first: Leave the Ultra 2 on the charger, or confirm it is at least at 30%, before you start.
2. Open Galaxy Wearable: On the paired Android phone, open the Wearable app while the watch is connected.
3. Watch settings: Tap Watch settings, then Watch software update, then Download and install.
4. Wait through reboot: The watch reboots and shows a progress bar or a rotating animation while the 220MB-class file applies.

Wear OS models can also check from the watch. Open Settings, then Software update. The watch still needs to be paired to a compatible Android phone. Samsung’s help page notes that the “Auto download over Wi-Fi” switch is not offered on Wear OS models, so this one is a manual tap.

iPhone pairings use the Galaxy Watch app, not Wearable. On iOS, the path is Home, then About watch, then Install if a file is waiting. New Galaxy phones have already shown how a software handoff can break a core app, including RCS errors on new Galaxy phones after Smart Switch. A watch security stamp is a smaller file, but the same advice applies: let it finish, then confirm the build under About watch.

Five Years of Patches Through 2031

At Unpacked in London on July 22, Samsung lengthened software support for the Watch 9 and Ultra 2. Both watches are promised five major Wear OS upgrades and five years of security patches, which should run through 2031 and, on paper, to Wear OS 12. From the Galaxy Watch 4 through last year’s models, the OS promise was four upgrades with the same five-year security window. Google’s Pixel Watch line still sits at three years of OS updates.

Sept. 1 is day one of that five-year security clock in the US. The watches went on sale Aug. 7 already off the August SMR that Samsung had posted Aug. 4. Twenty-five days later, Verizon wrote the first US Ultra 2 line, and it was a patch level, not a feature list.

Wrist computers now carry more than lap times. Fall detection, a five-press SOS, and an 86-decibel siren live on this chassis, and other brands are pushing the watch into phone theft flows, including the Apple Watch theft detection role around snatch-lock. A monthly security stamp is how that kind of device is supposed to age. The first Ultra 2 stamp just arrived after the cheaper Watch 9, after the Watch 5, and after a 28-day gap from Samsung’s own August bulletin.
