The iPhone 18 Pro Max Splits Apple’s Fall in Two

Apple has set Wednesday, September 9 for an event expected to show the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone 18 Pro, and a first foldable iPhone. Hardware chief Greg Joswiak posted that date on August 26.

John Ternus became chief executive on September 1. He inherits a fall lineup that leaves the regular iPhone at home and puts 12GB of memory between most owners and the hardest on-device features in iOS 27.

Apple Has Named the Day, and a New Boss

Joswiak’s In the Loop note is the first hard calendar fact in a summer of leaks. He wrote, “Surprise and shine! It’s almost time for the #AppleEvent, on Wednesday, September 9!” Apple has not published a product list, so the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the smaller Pro, and a foldable still sit in the rumored pile rather than on a spec sheet.

The company already told investors who would be on that stage. In an April 20 newsroom post, Apple said Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus becomes Apple CEO on September 1. Ternus spent 25 years in hardware, including the Apple silicon shift on Macs. The Wednesday, September 9 Apple Event is his first as CEO, eight days into the job.

Leak calendars cluster pre-orders on Saturday, September 12 and first sales on Friday, September 18. Those dates are not official. The only public markers Apple has actually signed are the ones below.

A fall with no standard iPhone is the part of that calendar most buyers have not priced in. Supply-chain notes have been saying for months that the regular iPhone 18 slips to spring 2027, with an iPhone Air 2 window still split between fall and spring.

The Camera Finally Uses Real Aperture Blades

Every iPhone Pro from the 14 Pro through the 17 Pro Max has used a fixed f/1.78 main lens. Bright scenes get pulled back in software. Portrait blur is painted on after the shot. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to break that streak with a mechanical iris on the 48MP main camera, a multi-blade opening that moves through a range of about f/1.4 to f/2.8 instead of sitting on one stop.

Samsung tried a simpler version first. The Galaxy S9 offered two stops, f/1.5 and f/2.4, in 2018, then dropped the idea by the Galaxy S20. Huawei’s Mate 50 Pro later ran a wider f/1.4 to f/4 range. Apple’s version, if it ships as described, is meant to move continuously, which matters most for video: the lens can hold a slower shutter without blowing the highlights, so motion blur looks like a camera, not a filter.

Jeff Pu of GF Securities put that variable aperture on both the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and the 6.9-inch Pro Max, not on the Max alone. Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities had both Pro phones on the same hardware as far back as late 2024, after Apple pushed the feature off the iPhone 17 Pro. Recaps that still treat the iris as a Max exclusive are behind those notes. Dummy models have shown the Max camera plateau growing from about 11.23mm to 11.54mm, the kind of extra height a mechanical iris needs.

WHAT THE IRIS CHANGES IN PRACTICE

• Light in: The blades open wide in dim rooms and close down in noon sun, so the sensor is not stuck at f/1.78 in every scene.
• Blur: Background falloff can come from the lens instead of a software mask, which is the gap four generations of computational portraits have been papering over.
• Video: A moving iris can keep shutter speed in a cinematic range without a drop-in ND filter or a digital workaround.
• Weight and height: The mechanism is why leaks keep adding grams and a slightly taller camera bar to the Pro Max, with 240 grams still an unconfirmed figure in the rumor pile.

Actuators are being tracked to Luxshare ICT and Sunny Optical, with aperture parts also tied to LG Innotek and Foxconn. Later camera notes add a Sony IMX-905 stacked sensor in place of the IMX-903 and a 24MP front camera, up from 18MP in Pu’s February chart. Those front-camera figures still disagree with each other, so treat 24MP as a later leak, not a locked spec. Under-display Face ID is the piece Pu called unlikely in this cycle; he expected a smaller Dynamic Island instead.

12GB Is the Ticket to iOS 27’s Advanced AI

Pu’s February note is the cleanest map of the high-end silicon. The iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Fold are all listed with the same A20 Pro chip, 12GB of LPDDR5, and Apple’s C2 modem. The A20 Pro is described as Apple’s first phone chip on TSMC’s 2-nanometer N2 node, using wafer-level multi-chip module packaging that builds the memory in with the processor instead of attaching it later.

TSMC’s own N2 paper puts that node at a 15% speed gain or 30% power reduction against 3nm, with more than 1.15 times chip density. The foundry says N2 entered volume production in 2025, with N2P, a 5% speed bump on the same design rules, aimed at 2026. N2P is also listed at an 18% speed gain or 36% power cut, and 1.2 times logic density, versus N3E. Early iPhone notes talked about an 80% jump in 2nm manufacturing cost against current chips; that figure has not been confirmed by TSMC or Apple.

The memory number is doing more work than the camera. Coverage of WWDC 2026 described a 12GB floor for iOS 27’s hardest on-device features, including a more expressive Siri voice and sharper dictation, with Private Cloud Compute unable to fill in for the missing RAM. Kuo has the spring iPhone 18 at 9GB. Last year’s non-Pro iPhone 17 is widely listed at 8GB. Standard Apple Intelligence can still run on those phones. The advanced tier cannot, if that floor holds.

WHO CLEARS THE 12GB FLOOR

Pu also flagged why that 12GB is expensive. LPDDR and NAND now make up as much as 20 to 30 percent of a smartphone’s bill of materials, he wrote, and those costs are still rising. J.P. Morgan’s later memory math, summarized in June, put an iPhone’s memory bill at about $65 in 2025, $114 in 2026, and $228 in 2027, while non-memory parts fell from about $449 to $426 and then $384. HBM for AI accelerators pays three to five times more per wafer than the LPDDR5X in a phone, which is why the cheap memory is the part in short supply.

One other split sits in the modem. Pu listed C2 on all three premium phones. Later leak files say U.S. units keep Qualcomm because C2 still misses mmWave, the 24 to 39 GHz band Verizon and AT&T use in dense cities. If that holds, American Pro Max buyers would not get the power saving of an in-house modem stacked with the A20 Pro, and they would not get the satellite broadband path C2 is supposed to open abroad. That difference will not show up as a separate model name on the box.

Everyone Else Waits Until Spring 2027

Apple has sold a new iPhone every September for a generation. This fall is the first break in that habit. The Pro, the Pro Max, and a foldable take the event. The regular iPhone 18 is being held for spring 2027. People who upgrade on a yearly cadence, and who do not want a Pro bill, now have a six-month hole where a new phone used to be.

Pu sketched the foldable as a 7.8-inch inner screen with a cover smaller than 5.3 inches, Touch ID in a side button instead of Face ID, and a titanium and aluminum body. He expected it to share the A20 Pro, 12GB, and C2 with the Pro phones. Production is the open argument. Some notes say the crease and yield problems are solved and the phone is on a September schedule. Others still warn that units will be scarce at launch. Apple has not confirmed a name, a size, or a price.

Battery is firmer than the fold, and still not locked. Digital Chat Station, a Weibo leaker with a long iPhone track record, had U.S. Pro Max engineering samples at 5,100 to 5,200mAh against 5,088mAh in the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with China closer to 5,000mAh. A later reading of China’s 3C filings put the Pro Max cell at 5,567 mAh, about 9% above 5,088mAh. Either way the cell bump is modest. The runtime case still leans on N2 efficiency, not on a much fatter pack.

WHAT WE KNOW

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

• The foldable: Size, name, yield, and whether it ships with the Pros or lags by weeks.
• The colors: Dark Cherry (Pantone 6076 in one leak) is the finish replacing last year’s orange, with Light Blue, Silver, and Dark Gray also in the pile.
• The front: A smaller Dynamic Island is more likely than under-display Face ID, and even that cut is still being argued at 25% to 35% narrower, or not at all.

Color is the least settled piece a week out. Fresh leaks on September 1 put black back in the Pro set and treat silver as the finish most likely to be cut, including from case-maker ads that look like unofficial swatches. Apple often trims a color after the paint is already in the rumor mill. Dark Cherry is the one name that has stuck across months of notes.

How Much Will the iPhone 18 Pro Max Cost?

The iPhone 17 Pro still starts at $1,099 in the United States. The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 for 256GB. Whether those floors move is the loudest fight in the research, and it is not settled. Cook said earlier this year that price increases were “unavoidable” as memory stayed tight. He did not attach a number to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

In May, both Kuo and Pu were described as holding the entry price flat and lifting 512GB and 1TB instead, leaving the Pro at $1,099 and the Pro Max at $1,199. By late June the camps had spread. TechInsights’s component model said Apple would need about $270 more than $1,099 to keep the same margin, a $1,299 to $1,369 start on the Pro. Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak put the memory hit at $150 to $200 per phone. IDC’s Nabila Popal, after Apple raised some Mac and iPad prices by as much as $300, revised to a $100 lift on Pro and Pro Max and $50 on base models.

WHERE THE PRICE CAMPS STAND

• J.P. Morgan: Samik Chatterjee told clients to expect about $50, a mid-single-digit rise, with modem savings and other parts offsetting a $100-plus memory headwind.
• IDC: $100 on Pro and Pro Max after the June Mac and iPad increases, $50 on base phones.
• Counterpoint: $150 to $200 added by memory alone, with fatter storage SKUs taking more of the blow.
• TechInsights: About $270 to hold today’s margin, which is the $1,299 to $1,369 band now copied through rumor roundups.
• Kuo and Pu, May: Keep the $1,099 and $1,199 entry points, raise 512GB and 1TB.

Kuo has also said a variable-aperture module could cost Apple about 50% more than the current lens. J.P. Morgan’s offset story depends on C2 replacing Qualcomm and on other parts getting cheaper, which is the same modem that may not ship in U.S. mmWave phones. The $1,299 starting price now circulating for a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max is a rumor, not a list price. It sits at the low end of the TechInsights band and $100 above today’s Max. The $50 camp is still in the file.

The battery argument has not left either. In the most-replied rumor thread this cycle, people planning an upgrade kept returning to the same two points: another year of a phone that looks like last year’s, and a cell that still feels like the weak item. The iris does not answer that. A 9% bump to 5,567mAh, if the 3C reading is right, does not either, unless the 2nm chip does the quiet work in the background.

The ₹1,49,900 Floor Indian Buyers Already Know

India is where a U.S. rounding error becomes a round number people notice. Apple’s Indian list for the iPhone 17 Pro Max is ₹1,49,900 for 256GB, ₹1,69,900 for 512GB, ₹1,89,900 for 1TB, and ₹2,29,900 for 2TB. The iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB opened at ₹1,44,900, so last year’s Max already moved ₹5,000 before anyone started arguing about 2nm wafers.

A rumored iPhone 18 Pro Max start around ₹1,69,900 would put the new 256GB phone on the same sticker as today’s 512GB 17 Pro Max. That is a ₹20,000 step on the floor SKU. Apple has not posted an India price. Converted against last year’s U.S. tag of $1,199, India’s 17 Pro Max 256GB already sits well above U.S. post-tax totals in cities that add ordinary sales tax, a gap local reporting has kept documenting even after more assembly shifted to India.

256GB PRO MAX STICKERS, YEAR TO YEAR

If Kuo and Pu are right and only the 512GB and 1TB SKUs move, Indian shoppers who can live on 256GB are in a better seat than the ₹1,69,900 recaps imply. If TechInsights is right, that 256GB floor is the one that breaks. Storage is the lever either way. Pu’s build notes already treat NAND as part of the 20 to 30 percent memory share that is squeezing every phone maker, and one June component rundown put a 256GB NAND package at about $51, up from about $13 a year earlier. That is why a “starting price” fight is really a fight about which SKU Apple is willing to protect.

The delayed regular iPhone matters more in this market than in Cupertino’s slides. A buyer who wanted a new iPhone in September without a Pro bill now waits until spring, then still misses the 12GB AI tier if Kuo’s 9GB figure holds. The Pro Max becomes the only same-year path to that tier, which is how a camera leak turns into a price architecture.

Ternus Walks Into a Split Product Year

Cook’s April handoff note was the closest thing Apple has offered to a thesis for this week. He did not talk about an iris, a foldable, or 12GB. He talked about the person who built the hardware.

John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future.

Ternus now has eight days between that job and a keynote that will be judged on a mechanical camera, a 2nm chip, and a foldable that may or may not be in the building. The quieter test is whether he holds the $1,199 Max floor, whether 12GB remains a Pro wall in iOS 27, and whether a company that has trained the world to expect a new iPhone every September can skip a year for everyone who is not buying Pro.

Joswiak already put the date on the wall. The iris will get the demo. The split year is what buyers will still be living with in March.
