Our position

NEWS ANALYSIS respects copyright. We publish our own reporting, we license or create the images we use, and we quote from other work only to the extent that reporting and comment require, with attribution and a link. If we have nonetheless used material we should not have, we want to know and we will act.

Reporting an infringement

If you own rights in material you believe appears on newsanalysis.net without authorisation, send a notice through our Contact page with the subject line beginning Copyright. To be actionable, a notice needs to contain the following.

1. Identification of the work you claim has been infringed. Where multiple works are covered by one notice, a representative list.

2. Identification of the material on our site you say is infringing, precise enough for us to find it. The full web address of the page, and where the page contains several items, which item you mean.

3. Your contact details: name, postal address, telephone number and email address.

4. A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the rights holder, its agent, or the law.

5. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate, and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the rights holder or authorised to act on the rights holder’s behalf.

6. Your physical or electronic signature.

A notice missing these elements may not be valid and may delay our response. Please do not send a general complaint in place of a notice if you want formal action.

What we do with a notice

We review each notice on its facts. Where a claim is well founded we remove or disable access to the material promptly. Where a use is plainly fair dealing or fair use, such as a short quotation for reporting and comment with attribution, we may decline and will explain why rather than simply not replying.

We will not remove an article because its subject dislikes it. A copyright notice aimed at suppressing accurate reporting rather than protecting a work is an abuse of the process, and we treat it as such.

Counter notice

If material of yours was removed and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you may send a counter notice containing: your contact details; identification of the material and where it appeared before removal; a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification; your consent to the jurisdiction of an appropriate court; and your signature. We will forward it to the original complainant.

Repeat infringers

We do not host user uploaded content, so the usual account termination provisions have little application here. Where a contributor supplied material that infringed, we stop using their material.

Using our work

Our own articles and images are protected. Brief quotation with attribution and a link is welcome. Wholesale republication is not permitted without written permission. To request permission, or to report someone republishing our work without it, write to us through our Contact page. Our Terms of Service set out the wider position on use of the site.
