What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to store, so that information can be carried between pages or between visits. Similar technologies such as local storage and pixels do comparable jobs. This page describes how newsanalysis.net uses them and how you can control them.

Why we use them

We use cookies and similar storage for three purposes, and it is worth separating them because the trade off is different in each case.

First and third party

Some storage is set by this site directly. Some is set by third parties whose code runs on the page, principally our analytics and advertising providers. We do not control what those third parties do with what they collect, which is why we name the categories here rather than implying we can account for every item.

How long they last

Session storage is discarded when you close your browser. Persistent storage remains for a defined period so that a preference or a frequency limit survives between visits. Periods vary by purpose and by provider.

Controlling cookies

Your browser is the primary control. Every major browser lets you view stored cookies, delete them, block third party cookies, or block all cookies. The relevant settings are usually under Privacy or Site Settings, and browser help pages explain the exact steps for your version.

Blocking analytics and advertising storage will not stop you reading this site. Blocking all cookies, including essential ones, may cause parts of the site to behave unpredictably.

Many browsers also offer a private or incognito mode, which discards storage when the window closes, and some offer built in tracking protection that restricts third party identifiers automatically.

Do Not Track

Browsers vary in how they signal a tracking preference and there is no single standard our providers all honour. We prefer to tell you plainly what is set and how to control it rather than point at a signal whose effect we cannot guarantee.

Advertising choices

Industry bodies in several regions operate opt out pages covering participating advertising networks. Those tools control interest based advertising rather than advertising in general, so you will still see advertisements, selected with less information about you.

Changes

As our analytics or advertising providers change, the specific items stored on your device change with them. We will keep this page current at the level of categories and purposes.
