Harmanpreet Kaur’s 91 Comes 14 Days After She Quit
Harmanpreet Kaur hit 91 not out in Raipur 14 days after quitting as India captain, then cried about the batting she had set aside.
Harmanpreet Kaur hit 91 not out off 41 balls as India posted 216 for 7 against Zimbabwe in Raipur on October 20. Then, in the innings break, she could not get through a live interview without the tears coming.
She had quit as India captain on October 6. This was her first fifty with no title on her back, and the first time she said, in public, that the pressure had gone.
She Walked In During the Eighth Over and Stayed
India chose to bat in the third T20I in Raipur so the middle order would get a hit, and Smriti Mandhana, the new captain, stayed in the dugout. Anushka Sharma opened with Shafali Verma and made 28 off 20 before a leaping catch at midwicket ended the stand on 54 in the sixth over.
Niki Prasad, in at No. 3, fell for 9 to another sharp catch. Shafali did not slow down, reaching her 23rd T20I fifty off 26 balls and finishing with 69 off 37, six fours and five sixes in the innings.
Harmanpreet walked in at No. 4 in the eighth over, hit one four in her first 12 balls, then took 20 off Kudzai Chigora including two fours and two sixes. She and Shafali added 84 for the third wicket before Shafali left at 152 for 3 in the 15th over, after which the other end kept folding, Richa Ghosh making 1, Deepti Sharma 0 and Arundhati Reddy 4.
Harmanpreet was on 81 when the last over started. She scored 10 off it and walked off not out, with two of her sixes off Beloved Biza measured at 82 metres and 89 metres, and with a strike rate of 221.95. It was her 19th T20I fifty, reached off 25 balls, and her second-highest T20I score, behind the 103 she made against New Zealand at the 2018 T20 World Cup, still the highest by an Indian at No. 4 or lower in the format.
HOW INDIA GOT TO 216
| Batter | Runs | Balls | Fours | Sixes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harmanpreet Kaur | 91* | 41 | 10 | 5 |
| Shafali Verma | 69 | 37 | 6 | 5 |
| Anushka Sharma | 28 | 20 | 4 | 1 |
The total was India’s joint-third-highest in T20Is. Zimbabwe were 62 for 2 after 10 overs with the required rate already at 15.50, and they closed on 124 for 7, Sharne Mayers making 60 and Nandani Sharma taking 3 for 18, two of those in the last over. India won by 92 runs and took the series 3-0, with Harmanpreet named player of the match.
The board posted the innings while it was still being played.

The Interview That Would Not Stay Dry
The tears did not wait for the prize. They came at the break, with former India coach WV Raman on the other side of the microphone, the same man who had met the squad when it arrived and told her to play on her own terms.
The moment we came, you stepped in and you said, ‘Now you do what you want to do,’ and that’s what I want to do, and really want to enjoy myself. Thanks for those words.

She had already said it felt great to get time in the middle. Then the credit to Raman landed, and she had to stop. Raman coached this India side earlier in her years as captain. On this night he was in the broadcast box, offering a 37-year-old who had just left the job a sentence she treated as permission.
She also pointed at the nets. “After the Asian Games, I got some time in the nets. I really want to thank Himanshu bhaiya, who’s been working really hard on me, and today’s batting was all him,” she said, naming batting coach Himanshu Chawla before the chase had even begun.
Fourteen Days After She Put Her Own Game Aside
On October 6 she stepped down across all formats in a long Instagram note, the morning after a review in Guwahati with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, head coach Amol Muzumdar and Mandhana. The line that now sits under the Raipur interview was already in that post.
I have given everything I had to this team and to Indian women’s cricket: my blood, my sweat, my time, and many times, a part of my own game and personal ambitions. There were moments when I had to put my individual performance, my own growth, and what I wanted for myself aside, because I believed the team had to come first.
Harmanpreet Kaur, Instagram statement, October 6, 2026
She had led India in 5 Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is, and she is the first captain, woman or man, to go past 150 T20Is in charge. In November 2025 she took India to their first women’s World Cup title on home soil against South Africa, becoming the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to win a 50-over World Cup. She closed the job with a second straight Asian Games gold, in Nisshin in September, and then wrote that she was ready to play for the love of the game again.
The selection panel, chaired by Amita Sharma, had been split after India’s second successive T20 World Cup group-stage exit in June. She had wanted to lead at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Mandhana, who had already led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to WPL titles in 2024 and 2026, took the job in all three formats instead. Fourteen days later, the player who had just described setting her own game aside was still there at the end of 20 overs.
Gold Medals, Then Eight Innings Without a Fifty
India kept winning the events captains are judged on. The batting did not travel with the medals, and the wait reached eight innings without a fifty before Raipur, a run that went through the Women’s T20 Asia Cup and the Asian Games even as India lifted both.
FROM THE JUNE EXIT TO RAIPUR
- June 2026: India go out of the T20 World Cup at the group stage for the second tournament in a row, and talk about a change in captaincy gets louder.
- September 2026: Harmanpreet leads India to Asian Games gold in Nisshin, her last assignment as captain, after another Asia Cup title in the same year.
- October 6, 2026: She quits all three formats on Instagram the morning after the Guwahati review, and Mandhana is named captain.
- First two T20Is vs Zimbabwe: She is out for 1, then does not bat as the series is already won.
- October 20, 2026: She bats through from the eighth over in Raipur and is named player of the match.
A captain can live with quiet personal returns if the side keeps collecting gold. Once the title is gone, those same returns become the whole file. Raipur was the first time the new file had a proper sitting, and it was also the first time she said the job had been sitting on the batting.
The New Captain Did Not Need to Bat
Mandhana said at the toss that India were batting so the middle order would get time in the middle, after the top order had stalled in the first match and the middle order had not batted in the second. Anushka opened. Mandhana did not come out. The player who needed the sit was the former captain at No. 4, and she used all of it.
The 3-0 result is Mandhana’s first full T20I series as India captain, completed without her facing a ball in the decider. That is not a slight. It is how a new captain used a dead-rubber night: rest herself, push a young opener up, and let a 37-year-old middle-order hitter have a full innings on a pitch that came onto the bat.
She also liked the bowling depth, with Niki Prasad and Shafali among those used, and she said more options would help through the dew months before the Champions Trophy, a six-team T20I event India will host in Mumbai and Vadodara in February 2027. “The more the merrier,” she said of the attack. The batting question she solved on the night was simpler: give the people who had not batted a game.
What a 91 Against Zimbabwe Cannot Prove
The tears were immediately treated as a statement about the captaincy change, as if a 91 had been scored at Mandhana rather than at Chigora. That reading skips the words she used. She thanked a former coach, a batting coach, and a bat swing. She did not build a case against the new captain, who had just cleared her a path to the crease.
WHAT THE KNOCK SETTLES, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT
- The sitting: She made 1, then did not bat, then 91 not out only after Mandhana rotated the order so No. 4 would get time.
- The bowling: Zimbabwe leaked 216, Chigora going for 40 off three overs and Biza finishing with 3 for 50, so the attack cannot carry a claim that the old Harmanpreet is simply back.
- The words: She named Raman’s sentence, Chawla’s nets, and the end of pressure, which matches the October 6 note about setting her own game aside.
- The T20 World Cup: A night in Raipur does not close the June group-stage file against stronger sides, and it was never going to.
A 91 here is still a 91, and it is still her first fifty since the job ended. It is also a knock against a side that was 92 runs short on a true pitch. The honest read is narrower than the clip that travelled: the captaincy had a cost she had already named, the new captain gave her a full innings, and she played it like the hitter who made 103 in 2018, until the overs ran out.
She Wants That Feeling Back in the Nets
“I don’t think there is any pressure anymore. I think now it’s all about enjoying myself on the field and I think that’s what I want to do,” she said after the match. “I definitely enjoy myself in the middle and this is what I’m here for. I just want to enjoy my batting, and good that those runs came.”
The method she wants to keep is specific. Bat swing, she said, is the key, and Chawla has been making her feel match pressure in the nets so the game itself does not add a second layer. She also named Munish Bali among the staff who understand the kind of batting she can do. The Player of the Match knock was the first public return on that work.
She was on 81 with one over left and a hundred in sight. She got 10, finished 91 not out, and still had to stop in the break to thank a man in the commentary box for telling her she could play the way she wanted. The title is gone. The next time she walks in, that is the whole job.
