Kalaburagi and Pune Win the Bengaluru Mumbai Sleeper
The proposed Nov 1 Vande Bharat Sleeper gives Kalaburagi and Pune a 16-hour overnight, while Hubballi loses the alignment and flights still win the clock.
South Western Railway has proposed flagging off the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper on November 1, a 1,118 km overnight that would run via Kalaburagi and Pune. Regular dates, the fare list and a Railway Board notice are still outstanding.
The two metros get the name on the train. The alignment already decided who actually rides it.
Kalaburagi Won the Corridor Fight
Passenger groups in western Karnataka spent October asking for a split week, three days via Hubballi and three via Kalaburagi, plus faster work on the Tumakuru-Davanagere and Dharwad-Kittur-Belagavi lines. The rake in front of South Western Railway is not built for that compromise.
Sunil Kulkarni, president of Kalyana Karnataka Grahakara Vedike, said the Kalaburagi line was the one that could actually run fast, because detours at Arsikere and Londa add around five hours on the Hubballi path and the Kalaburagi alignment cuts the distance by more than 100 km. Belagavi activist Ashok Chandargi has long blamed the Londa loop for isolating Belagavi from Hubballi-Dharwad, Bengaluru and Mumbai. Rohit Jain, general secretary of the SWR Passengers Committee in Davanagere, said a Hubballi routing would have served Tumakuru, Davanagere, Haveri, Dharwad and Belagavi.
SWR chief public relations officer Manjunath Kanamadi said route, stops and timings sit with the Railway Board. The Board’s working plan is the Guntakal line, with seven intermediate stops and no Hubballi, no Dharwad and no Belagavi.
WHO GETS THE OVERNIGHT
- Kalaburagi and Raichur: Kalyana Karnataka gets a premium sleeper on a line already sold as having fewer curves.
- Solapur and Pune: Maharashtra’s interior and the Pune-Bengaluru overnight market sit on the same rake.
- Anantapur and Guntakal: Andhra stations on the Guntakal route pick up a one-seat run to both metros.
- Hubballi belt: Tumakuru, Davanagere, Haveri, Dharwad and Belagavi stay off this trainset.
Karnataka Rajyotsava is the wrapper. Most of the fast running sits on the Deccan corridor that beat the state’s west.

Sixteen Hours Is Still a Night on the Train
The working timetable has the train leaving Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal in Byappanahalli at 7:50 pm and reaching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 11:55 am, a run of 16 hours 5 minutes. The return would leave CSMT at 8:10 pm and arrive at SMVT at 11:55 am, 15 hours 45 minutes later. Average speed works out to about 70 kmph.
Udyan Express, the daily direct train on the pair of cities, covers 1,134 km in about 22 hours at about 52 kmph. The sleeper would save around six hours on that haul, and it would do it with seven stops instead of a long mail-express chain.
It would not save time against a car on a clean day. The road is about 984 km and usually takes 15 to 17 hours. It would not save time against a plane at all. Nonstop flights between Kempegowda and Mumbai cover 838 km in 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes, and the pair of airports had 379 weekly nonstops on schedules updated October 19.
THE CLOCK AND THE FARE
| Mode | Journey time | Distance | Indicative 3AC or economy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat Sleeper (SMVT to CSMT) | 16 hours 5 minutes | 1,118 km | Rs 2,684 |
| Udyan Express | About 22 hours | 1,134 km | About Rs 1,475 |
| Nonstop flight | 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes | 838 km | Listed from about Rs 3,743 |
| Road | 15 to 17 hours | 984 km | Fuel and tolls vary |
Arrive at 11:55 am and the morning meeting in either city is already gone. The product is a night in a berth, not a substitute for the 379 weekly flights.
What the Tickets Are Likely to Cost
Indian Railways has not issued the fare table for this pair of terminals. The sleeper’s notified rate is Rs 2.40 a km in AC three-tier, excluding GST, with an indicative Rs 2,400 for 1,000 km. On 1,118 km that lands at about Rs 2,684 in 3AC, Rs 3,466 in AC two-tier and Rs 4,250 in first AC, which is the set of tickets now being discussed around the launch.
Udyan is cheaper in every class, about Rs 1,475, Rs 2,100 and Rs 3,520. The sleeper’s 3AC ticket sits Rs 1,209 above Udyan’s. Against air, the 3AC berth undercuts listings that started around Rs 3,743 on October 21, while first AC overlaps the lower end of air fares.
A full 823-berth trip at those indicative rates would take in about Rs 23.94 lakh one way. The sleeper has no RAC. Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said these trains are meant for middle-class families. The 3AC math is in that band if the Board keeps the per-km rate. It is not a cheap night if the passenger’s other option is Udyan.
Pune Gets an Overnight Bengaluru Train
For Pune, this is not a halt on someone else’s metro train. The same rake is the first serious attempt at an overnight Vande Bharat-class run toward Bengaluru. Railway officials have put Pune-Bengaluru at about 13 hours, against 18 hours 15 minutes on Udyan.
Solapur sits in the middle of that Maharashtra leg. Kalyan is the Mumbai-side suburban gate. Watering and terminal work has already been discussed at Solapur and Pune, which is how a six-day sleeper actually turns around.
In April 2026, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Centre had approved a Mumbai to Bengaluru sleeper from CSMT. The Bengaluru end later moved, in the working plan, from KSR Bengaluru City to SMVT. Mumbai still gets a CSMT arrival in the city core. Bengaluru gets Byappanahalli.
BEML Built This Rake in Bengaluru
The coaches are not a northern castoff. Bharat Earth Movers Limited assembled the sleeper at its Bengaluru rail complex, using ICF technology, on an order for 10 trainsets. Vaishnaw unveiled the sleeper trainset at BEML on September 1, 2024. In December 2025 the prototype ran at 180 kmph on the Kota-Nagda section under the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Service speed is listed at 160 kmph. On this corridor the timetable still averages about 70 kmph, because the track, not the motors, sets the night.
India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper, Howrah-Kamakhya, was flagged off on January 17, 2026 and went into regular service from January 22. The Bengaluru-Mumbai pair, numbered 27651 and 27652, would be the second sleeper service and the first in the South. Two 16-coach rakes are meant to hold a six-day week, with one day left for maintenance. South Western Railway commissioned the sets in August 2026, with Bengaluru DRM Ashutosh Kumar Singh saying the timetable would follow.
THE 823-BERTH RAKE
- AC three-tier: 11 coaches and 611 berths, the volume class that has to fill if the train pays.
- AC two-tier: 4 coaches and 188 berths.
- First AC: 1 coach and 24 berths, with showers listed among the 1AC fittings.
- Safety fit: Kavach, CCTV, crashworthy buffers, fire detection, automatic doors and emergency talk-back.
The Press Information Bureau’s 2024 note on the BEML rake described a 16-coach sleeper with 823 berths, austenitic stainless steel bodies, USB charging, modular pantries and an accessible toilet. IRCTC has been working on a menu with regional food. ICF has separately talked about a future 24-car sleeper. This service is the 16-car set.
Vande Bharat trains are meant for the middle class families.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union railway minister, BEML Bengaluru, September 1, 2024
That line only holds on this route if 3AC stays near Rs 2,684 and the berths actually sell against Udyan and against air.
SMVT Boarding Leaves the City Station Behind
SMVT in Byappanahalli is on Bengaluru’s east side. KSR Bengaluru City is where most long-distance passengers still think the city begins. Railway sources now have the sleeper starting and ending at SMVT, not KSR. That is already the sore point among people who want the train at the city station or at Yesvantpur.
The east terminal is easier for a rake that has to be maintained and turned. It is harder for a family coming in from the west or the south, and it adds a metro or cab hop that the “station closer to home” pitch was supposed to avoid. Mumbai does not have that argument. CSMT is still CSMT.
Bangalore Central MP P.C. Mohan wrote on October 20 that the train was set to commence operations from Nov 1, thanking the prime minister, Vaishnaw and minister of state V. Somanna.
New super-fast Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper train is set to commence operations from Nov 1. South Western Railway has only proposed an inaugural special on that date. Replies under Mohan’s post went straight to the terminal, not the cake-cutting. The demand to put the rake at YPR or SBC is the part of the argument the flag-off photos will not settle.
The Railway Board Has Not Notified Regular Service
An official said the train could not start in October because the model code of conduct was in force for Karnataka Legislative Council elections. November 1 is Karnataka Rajyotsava. Railway sources have Vaishnaw flagging the special, with regular running expected from November 2, six days a week. That is not a published Board circular.
FROM THE BEML SHED TO THE PROPOSED FLAG-OFF
- September 1, 2024: Vaishnaw unveils the first BEML sleeper trainset in Bengaluru.
- December 2025: CRS clears a 180 kmph trial on Kota-Nagda.
- January 17, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi flags off Howrah-Kamakhya, the first sleeper service; regular running follows from January 22.
- April 2026: The Mumbai-Bengaluru sleeper is approved, with Fadnavis naming CSMT and KSR.
- August 2026: SWR commissions the two rakes meant for this corridor.
- October 2026: Council-poll code blocks an October start; SWR proposes a November 1 special from SMVT.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The rake: Two BEML 16-coach sets, 823 berths, train numbers 27651 and 27652.
- The path: Guntakal and Kalaburagi, with stops at Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune and Kalyan.
- The clock: 7:50 pm from SMVT, 8:10 pm from CSMT, both due at 11:55 am.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The notice: No Railway Board circular on the inaugural special or on regular dates.
- The fares: Class tickets at Rs 2,684, Rs 3,466 and Rs 4,250 remain indicative.
- The off day: Six days a week is the plan; which weekday stays dark has been described two different ways and is not notified.
If the special does run on November 1, Kalaburagi and Pune will have the overnight they fought for, and Hubballi will still be looking at a 20-hour map. The Board can still change the date, the terminal and the fare before anyone sleeps through that 1,118 km.
