Ranbir Kapoor Turns a Dussehra Slip Into a Rockstar Line

Playing Ram, Ranbir Kapoor said goodness would end at a Kolkata Dussehra event, then quoted Rockstar beside AR Rahman in Chennai.

Ranbir Kapoor used one wrong Hindi word on a Kolkata Dussehra stage on October 20, then said sorry in Chennai the next night with a line from Rockstar. He plays Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, which opens on November 5.

AR Rahman, who scored that 2011 song and the new epic, sat in the Chennai Trade Centre while the actor reached for a lyric about words that ruin what he wants to say.

One Hindi Word Flipped the Festival Line

On October 20, Salt Lake Sanskritik Sansad put on a Dussehra programme at Central Park in Salt Lake under the theme Ram Er Ayodhya, Ram Ki Ayodhya. Ranbir, producer Namit Malhotra, director Nitesh Tiwari, Yash, and Ravie Dubey, who plays Lakshman, shared the stage with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Ranbir opened with Jai Shri Ram and thanked the city for hosting the team. He then tried to give the festival its usual moral, that evil can look strong and still lose. The sentence that left the mic did the reverse. He put ant, ending, where jeet, victory, belonged, so truth and goodness died in the grammar instead of winning it.

THE WORD HE SAID AND THE WORD HE MEANT

The clip moved because of the billing. The man reciting Dussehra’s lesson is the film’s Ram, and a single syllable made the lesson collapse in public. The kinder reading is a packed live stage and a long promo road. The harder one is that a film this large keeps sending its Ram out to preach the epic, then needs him to unsay it the next night.

He Quoted Rockstar With Rahman in the Room

The repair came on October 21 at the film’s full album launch at the Chennai Trade Centre, with Sai Pallavi seated beside him. Ranbir did not argue with the clip. He named it a slip of the tongue, restated the line with jeet in it, and then borrowed a song from the last time Rahman scored his ruin.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the incident that happened yesterday. I was at the Dussehra event, and I had a slip of the tongue. What I meant to say is, Burai chahe kitni bhi takatvar kyun na ho, aakhir mei jeet achai aur sachai ki hogi. This reminds me of a collaboration that I had with Rahman sir in Rockstar. What I want to say is jo bhi main kehna chahoon, barbaad kare alfaaz mere. So I truly apologize for that.

Jo Bhi Main, sung by Mohit Chauhan with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, is the moment in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar when the hero admits that speech will not carry what he feels. The official Jo Bhi Main video song is fifteen years old and still does that job. Using it as an apology, with Rahman a few seats away, turned a political-religious scare into a craftsman’s joke, and it also confirmed the mistake in front of the people selling the album.

His voice shook on the way through the sentence. Sai Pallavi smiled. Rahman, 59, spent his own slot on a 2014 email from a man named Sathish who said he had dreamed the composer presenting Ramayana in shows across India and the world. Destiny talk and ruined words shared the same bill. Yash, who plays Ravana, told the room he learned Tamil from Rahman’s songs and used to dance to Gentleman, then said he was glad to perform to this score.

Bengal’s Tax Holiday Landed on the Same Stage

The Kolkata evening was not only a speech. Adhikari used it to announce that Ramayana will be tax-free in West Bengal, grouping the film with The Kerala Story, The Kashmir Files, and The Bengal Files. He also talked of more films on Krishna, Arjuna, and the Mahabharata.

Yash, speaking for the production, asked the crowd not to pick at small faults in the VFX. He said Malhotra had gambled his reputation and his money to put the film on a global platform, and that people like him would not come around again if this one is pulled down. Advance booking for November 5 opened the same day as that speech.

So the night that produced the viral line also produced a state tax break and the first tickets. The clip and the subsidy travelled together, which is why a syllable on a Salt Lake stage now sits inside a release campaign rather than outside it.

What a Rs 4,000 Crore Epic Is Betting

This is Ranbir’s first theatrical film since Animal in 2023, which took over Rs 900 crore worldwide. The new one is built as two parts, with previews on November 4, the first part on November 5, and the second aimed at Diwali 2027. He is Ram. Sai Pallavi is Sita. Yash is Ravana. Sunny Deol is Hanuman. Ravie Dubey is Lakshman. Rahman shares the score with Hans Zimmer.

At a Bengaluru trailer event on October 15, Yash put a number on the scale. Rs 4,000 crore covers both films, he said, including post-production and promotions, not the first part alone. He argued that Malhotra had to say the figure out loud for Western buyers, because a humble pitch gets filed as a small Indian film.

Prime Focus Studios is producing with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The company has already used the project as a calling card, including Ramayana’s CinemaCon showcase in Las Vegas, where Malhotra and Yash walked the film in front of exhibitors. International release sits with a Sony Pictures global distribution deal, while Dharma Productions is handling Hindi-speaking North India.

WHO IS ON THE HOOK

  • Namit Malhotra: His Prime Focus Studios is producing both parts and putting his VFX house, DNEG, on the images.
  • Yash: He plays Ravana and co-produces through Monster Mind Creations, which means the antagonist is also on the bill.
  • Sony Pictures: International theatrical is theirs, so a messy Indian promo week is not a local problem only.
  • Dharma Productions: Hindi North India is their corridor, the same belt that treats Ram as more than a role.
  • The lead: Ranbir, 44, has to hold maryada on camera and on the road until November 5.

A slip of the tongue does not move a budget that size. It does tell you how little spare language the campaign has, because every festival stop is now a test of whether Ram sounds like Ram.

Dil Raju Called Him Ranveer Singh First

The Kolkata line was the second public mix-up of the same stretch. At a Hyderabad pre-release event on October 19, producer-distributor Dil Raju praised the lead and landed on the wrong Kapoor. He called him the best hero, Ranveer Singh garu, then corrected himself to Ranbir Kapoor garu.

Two nights, two names that would not sit still. One was a presenter swapping stars. The other was the star swapping the moral of Dussehra. Neither is a scandal in isolation. Together they show a machine talking faster than it can hear itself, which is a strange look for a film that wants to be treated as scripture with IMAX tickets.

Ravana Tandav, a Dussehra-timed track with Yash on screen, had already split listeners before the Chennai launch, with some calling the tune thin and others waiting for the picture to save it. Jodi Jodi, sung that night by Chinmayi Sripada, drew warmer notices. The music is doing what the speeches are doing, asking for faith ahead of the print.

Tickets Kept Moving After the Clip

The clip did not freeze the window. Trade tracker Sacnilk’s October 22 morning count put India at Rs 7.08 crore in pre-sales including blocked seats, or Rs 5.15 crore without them. That is 1.25 lakh tickets with the blocks, 88,259 without, across 3,707 shows, with occupancy at 15 percent and no housefulls. All of it is for day one, November 5.

Maharashtra led the states at Rs 1.94 crore, 27 percent of the India gross. NCR was the top city at Rs 1.78 crore. Gujarat followed at Rs 49.94 lakh. Hindi 3D still carries most of the money. Premium seats are priced like an event: recliner rows at PVR ICON Phoenix Palladium in Lower Parel are listed at Rs 3,170 for select IMAX 3D shows on November 5 and 6.

Bookings opened on Dussehra, though not every cinema went live that morning after a fight over distributor share. The window is long on purpose. A 15 percent fill with two weeks of sale left is interest, not a rush. It is also not a punishment for the Salt Lake sentence. People are still buying Ram. They are also still watching the actor who has to say the line cleanly until the lights go down.

A Repair With Two Weeks on the Clock

Ramayana is asking a Hindi film star to carry a god into multiplexes that will charge three thousand rupees for a recliner, and into states that will drop the tax because the story is treated as public faith. That bargain leaves little room for ant where jeet belongs. The Chennai fix was quick, human, and a little show-business, which is both why it worked and why it will be replayed.

He has from here to November 5 to keep the words in the order the festival requires. Rahman already wrote the other version, the one where language fails the speaker, and Ranbir now has that lyric sitting on top of the epic he is meant to embody.
