Divya Vinekar died on October 19, 2026, after a small role as a female constable in Netflix’s Darlings. A radio colleague, not a studio, told Mumbai.

Last rites were held at 10 am on October 20, 2026, at Shivaji Park Hindu Crematorium. Radio jockey Rohini Ramnathan asked friends to skip the questions and leave the family room to grieve.

Rohini Ramnathan Asked the City for Space

Ramnathan wrote that “DV” had left for the heavenly abode that day, sudden and unexpected, and that people who wanted to say goodbye should come the next morning to the Dadar cremation ground. She named the place and the hour so the notice could do its job, then asked the rest of the city to hold back.

It is with utmost sadness and shock that I have to inform all those who love/adore our DV, @divyavinekar, that she left for the heavenly abode today. It was sudden and unexpected. The family and the ones whose lives she touched daily with her grace and love are dealing with this. Enquiries at this moment could be avoided. However, this is to inform those who wish to bid adieu to her: 10 am tomorrow, 20th of October, at Shivaji Park Hindu Crematorium.

The post is how the death entered the public record. Darlings and Jalsa did not put out a note of their own in the hours that followed. The name that carried the news was a Fever FM colleague who had shared a workplace with her.

THE LAST TWO DAYS

  1. October 19, 2026: Dies in Mumbai. Ramnathan tells friends the loss is sudden and unexpected and points them to the next morning at Shivaji Park.
  2. October 20, 2026: Final rites at 10 am at Shivaji Park Hindu Crematorium in Dadar. The cause of death is still not named.

Shivaji Park is a public farewell in a neighbourhood some old acquaintances still tied to her. The hour was early. The request attached to it was simple: do not crowd the family with questions they are not ready to answer.

What Divya Vinekar Played in Darlings

Darlings went up on Netflix in August 2022 as a dark comedy about domestic abuse, built around a mother and daughter in Mumbai. Jasmeet K. Reen directed. Alia Bhatt produced it as her first film in that role and starred with Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew.

Vinekar’s part was a female constable, a bit of the state at the edge of a story about a marriage the police often fail. The official Netflix India Darlings trailer sells that mother-daughter plot and the star faces. It does not have to introduce the woman in khaki.

The job arrived after a dry stretch. She had been out of work in the pandemic years and was sending self-taped auditions, the cheap new gate that replaced a waiting room. Four years after she turned more seriously toward acting in 2018, the tape led to a Netflix set.

Open the 2022 film’s public reviews and the argument is about tone, revenge and Vijay Varma. The constable is not in that fight. That is how a prestige OTT film is built: a few names carry the talk, and a larger room of day-players fills the station, the office and the street.

Ten Years in Digital Marketing Came First

Before the auditions, Vinekar spent nearly 10 years in digital marketing. The work was brands, copy and campaigns, the Mumbai desk job that pays rent while a person decides whether a stage or a camera is worth the cut in pay.

Around 2018 she moved the centre of gravity toward performing arts. She took freelance writing, made short videos and kept poetry in the mix. Early on she also tried Dubsmash and Musical.ly, the short-clip apps that trained a generation to perform in a phone before a casting director asked for a self-tape.

The pandemic then wiped the thin version of that plan. Unemployed, she kept taping. Darlings was the credit that made the gamble look real on a résumé, even if the scene itself was brief. Jalsa, another 2022 film with Shefali Shah, sat beside it the same year.

None of that reads as a straight actor’s CV. It reads as the CV a lot of Mumbai now actually has: a marketing decade, a phone camera, a radio shift, a small role in a star vehicle, and another invoice for words.

Kindness and Knowledge, Her Radio Friends Said

Ramnathan’s second note was not about Netflix. It was about Fever FM. She called Vinekar a pillar for her, and for the rest of the station, and she listed work ethic, kindness and knowledge as the reasons.

DV, as we know her fondly, was a pillar to me personally and professionally for all of us at Fever FM. Her work ethic, her kindness and her knowledge made her one of a kind. You’ll be missed, baby; go well. Thank you for being a part of us. We were blessed to have her.

That is the workplace that still had her nickname ready. Film sets cycle people through for a day or a week. A radio station keeps them in the building, in the group chat, in the habit of borrowing a charger.

THE JOBS SHE HELD TOGETHER

  • Marketing desk: Nearly 10 years in digital marketing before the 2018 turn toward performing arts.
  • Radio shift: Work at Fever FM that colleagues later described as a daily pillar, not a side hustle they barely noticed.
  • Freelance writing: Paid words between auditions, the invoice work that does not show up on a poster.
  • Short video: Humour clips and early experiments on Dubsmash and Musical.ly, then the self-tapes that replaced cattle-call rooms.
  • Poetry and posts: Verse and wry observations she kept online, a voice that did not need a film still to travel.
  • Screen and stage: Constable, office worker, aunt, short-form performer, and a part in the play Pink Is the New Black.

The film death notices led on Alia Bhatt because that is the search term that moves. The people who had to get through October 20 were the ones from the station who already called her DV.

Jalsa, a Short Film and One Stage Play

The same year as Darlings she appeared in Jalsa, the 2022 thriller with Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah, as an employee at WRD. The credit is another functionary in another star vehicle: an office, a title, a scene, then the poster moves on.

Two years earlier she had a short-form piece, My First Time: Job Interview, a title that sits almost too neatly next to the unemployed tape years. In 2024 she played Neela’s aunt in Kuch Sapney Apne. On stage she was in Pink Is the New Black. The list is short if you only count films, and longer if you count every room she actually worked in.

Look up the Darlings cast and crew listing and the names that hold the page are Bhatt, Shah, Varma and Mathew. A constable credit lives further down, which is where most of a film’s labour lives. Jalsa is the same shape with different stars.

Why Her Cause of Death Is Still Private

Ramnathan used the words sudden and unexpected and then asked people not to enquire. Two days later the cause is still not on the record. Old acquaintances who had known her for years on X were left in the same blank. One noted she had posted something ordinary only a week earlier. Another could not believe the news at all.

That silence is not a puzzle the public is owed. It is what a family can still keep when the dead person is not a headline star. The trade-off is ugly and ordinary: the death travels only if you attach a bigger name, and the medical fact stays in the house.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The date: She died on October 19, 2026, and last rites were at 10 am on October 20 at Shivaji Park Hindu Crematorium.
  • The messenger: Rohini Ramnathan, a Fever FM colleague, made the public note and asked for no enquiries.
  • The credits: Female constable in Darlings, WRD employee in Jalsa, Neela’s aunt in Kuch Sapney Apne, plus short-form and stage work.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The cause: No family statement, hospital note or police figure has named how she died.
  • A studio word: No public condolence from the Darlings or Jalsa producers sat beside the radio tribute in the first day of notices.

The people writing about her still needed Alia Bhatt and Vidya Balan in the first line, because a constable and a WRD employee do not move a death story on their own. The people who actually had to bury her already knew the nickname.

The Credits Under the Star Names

Hindi prestige film, especially on Netflix, runs on this labour. A producer-star launches a dark comedy about abuse. A second film the same year puts Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah on the poster. Somewhere in both frames is a woman who spent nearly 10 years selling other people’s brands, learned to tape herself in a pandemic, and kept a radio job that still knew her name when the films did not call.

On X the grief came from long-time Mumbai acquaintances, including people who thought of her as a Dadar regular, not from a studio account. They had watched her post through ordinary weeks. They did not have a cause to offer, and they did not pretend to.

Ramnathan asked the city to skip the enquiries. The family has not named a cause, and that request still stands.
