Jailer 2 Reaches ₹541 Crore as North Chains Stay Dark

Jailer 2 is at ₹541 crore worldwide after six days, with PVR INOX and Cinepolis still blocking its Hindi shows in the North.

Jailer 2 has grossed ₹541 crore worldwide in six days, even as PVR INOX and Cinepolis refused the Hindi version in the North.

Trade tracker Sacnilk puts the India net at ₹287.80 crore and India gross at ₹337 crore, with overseas at ₹204 crore. Sun Pictures sold a four-week streaming window. The two chains wanted eight.

₹541 Crore in Six Days Leaves Hindi Thin

The sequel opened on October 15, with Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian for writer-director Nelson Dilipkumar and producer Kalanithi Maran. Day 6, October 20, still took ₹45.55 crore net in India from 15,529 shows, a Tuesday hold that would look like a pan-India surge if the language split did not give the game away.

THE SIX-DAY HAUL

  • India net: ₹287.80 crore after six days, per Sacnilk.
  • India gross: ₹337 crore in the same stretch.
  • Overseas gross: ₹204 crore, including ₹10 crore on Day 6 alone.
  • Worldwide gross: ₹541 crore, because 337 plus 204 is 541.

On opening day the same tracker had India net at ₹59.70 crore from 16,599 shows and worldwide gross at ₹125.25 crore, with ₹55 crore of that from overseas. Tamil did ₹43.35 crore from 9,326 shows. Hindi did ₹3.50 crore from 4,371 shows, a lot of sessions for a thin take, and that pattern did not reverse.

Exhibitors in Kerala put the first-day gross in that state at about ₹12.65 crore. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana then supplied most of the domestic money through the weekend, which is why the worldwide number can look national while Hindi remains a side account.

Why PVR INOX and Cinepolis Sat Out

PVR INOX and Cinepolis require an eight-week gap between a theatrical opening and a streaming debut, and Sun Pictures with Hindi distributor Pen Marudhar Entertainment locked a four-week window for every language, so the chains cancelled Hindi shows in the North and left the version on single screens and smaller halls.

Industry accounts dated October 13, two days before release, said the fight was confined to Hindi. Tamil and Telugu bookings at those chains were not described as the problem. North Indian Rajinikanth crowds were told to hunt single screens and independent multiplexes, which is a poor substitute when the two largest chains own the premium houses in Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

THE WINDOW TERMS

  • The chains: PVR INOX and Cinepolis held to an eight-week theatrical-to-streaming gap.
  • The studio: Sun Pictures contracted to put the film on a streaming service within four weeks of release, in all languages.
  • The Hindi plan: Pen Marudhar wanted that same four-week clock, and the North Hindi dates at the two chains came off.
  • What still plays: Hindi continues in single screens and other standard theatres in the North.

The packaging was built to look national. Vidya Balan plays Kaantha, Mithun Chakraborty is in the cast, and Hrithik Roshan turns up as Roddy, a reunion 40 years after he appeared as a child with Rajinikanth in Bhagwan Dada. Mohanlal returns as Mathew, Shiva Rajkumar as Narasimha, Jackie Shroff as Kamdev. None of that opened the two chains in Hindi.

Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada on Day 6

Sacnilk’s Day 6 language line is the cleanest picture of where the money actually sat on October 20. Tamil still did the heavy lifting. Hindi ran thousands of shows and converted them poorly.

DAY 6 INDIA NET BY LANGUAGE

LanguageNet (₹ crore)Shows
Tamil31.207,828
Telugu8.752,293
Hindi5.005,230
Kannada0.60178
Total45.5515,529

Tamil supplied ₹31.20 crore of the ₹45.55 crore, or 68.5 percent of the day’s India net, from about half the shows. Hindi’s 5,230 shows were 33.7 percent of the day’s sessions and 11 percent of the day’s net. Telugu, with 2,293 shows, earned ₹8.75 crore, more than Hindi on fewer than half as many screenings.

That is what a North multiplex blackout looks like in a ledger. Hindi was not absent. It was over-screened in the halls that would take it, and under-screened in the halls that move the needle. Kannada added ₹0.60 crore from 178 shows and stayed a footnote, which is normal for this franchise outside its core map.

Jailer 2 Took Second Behind Street Fighter

Rentrak’s estimates for the October 16 to 18 weekend put Jailer 2 at $31.2 million worldwide, second only to Paramount’s Street Fighter at $51.1 million. Resident Evil followed at $22.6 million, then Other Mommy at $17.9 million and Verity at $17.6 million. A Tamil sequel with a blocked Hindi circuit still outgrossed those Hollywood titles on the global board.

The four-day India opening was estimated at ₹224 crore ($23.5 million), the third-highest four-day start on record for a Tamil-language film and effectively level with Rajinikanth’s Coolie at ₹224.25 crore ($23.6 million). Thursday, the first day, did $7 million. Sunday did $6.5 million after a Friday dip. Tamil Nadu alone accounted for $8.4 million of the weekend, with the rest of the South filling most of the remainder.

Sun Pictures spent the first weekend celebrating the run without publishing a rupee total. On October 17 the studio posted that Tiger Muthuvel Pandian was ruling theatres across the world and called the film a box-office rampage, then waited. Replies under that post treated the silence as a plan, with fans saying the company would hold the official number until Tuesday.

In North America, distributor Shloka Entertainments opened the film to more than $2 million on the first day. Rentrak had the Friday-to-Sunday frame at $3.2 million, good for ninth place, and a $5.2 million running total at that point. By October 20 Shloka had North America above $5.6 million and put overseas gross above $20 million, a dollar tally that sits beside Sacnilk’s ₹204 crore overseas rupee total rather than replacing it.

Those North America weekend figures also sit on the North American weekend chart, where Street Fighter led the same frame. The sequel could be ninth in America and second on the planet, and still be a Hindi orphan in Noida and Andheri, because those two facts live in different booking systems.

Jailer 1’s Lifetime Bar After Six Days

The first Jailer, released on August 10, 2023, followed Muthuvel Pandian back into violence when his family came under threat. Sacnilk’s lifetime line on that film is the bar the sequel is running against, and the overseas column has already moved.

JAILER AND JAILER 2, SIDE BY SIDE

Gross lineJailer (lifetime)Jailer 2 (six days)
India net₹348.55 crore₹287.80 crore
India gross₹408.74 crore₹337 crore
Overseas₹196.00 crore₹204 crore
Worldwide₹604.74 crore₹541 crore

Jailer 2’s ₹204 crore overseas in six days already tops the original’s ₹348.55 crore India net lifetime counterpart abroad, the ₹196 crore foreign lifetime, by ₹8 crore. India net still trails the original’s finished run by ₹60.75 crore, and worldwide trails by ₹63.74 crore. The foreign market is carrying weight the Hindi belt was supposed to carry, and it is doing it early.

Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa reprise their roles. S.J. Suryah joins as Bodhi Kalpak. Anirudh Ravichander is back on the score, Vijay Kartik Kannan on camera, R. Nirmal on the cut. The machine is the same shop that built the first film’s ₹604.74 crore worldwide total, now with more stars in the frame and fewer Hindi multiplexes on the map.

Sun Pictures Locked a Four-Week Streaming Gap

Vikatan’s reporting on October 16 said Sun Pictures had already contracted to bring Jailer 2 to a streaming service within four weeks of the theatrical opening. Bollywood’s exhibitor custom is eight weeks. That mismatch is the entire North Hindi story. Trade talk has the streaming debut on Amazon Prime Video around Diwali in November, in all languages, which would land inside the studio’s four-week clock if the date holds.

The chains are protecting occupancy in the weeks after a big opening, when a title still has to justify gold-class screens against the next Hindi release. The studio is protecting a streaming fee and a short exclusive. Hindi audiences in the North are the party with no seat at that table, which is why a film that can finish second on a global weekend chart still needs a single-screen hunt in the Hindi belt.

Critics who liked the film treated it as a commercial night out with a messy second half, not as a prestige bet that needed a long theatrical tail. Latha Srinivasan put the case in one paragraph, including a Jailer 3 nod that the makers have not fleshed out in public.

The sequel to Jailer is a solid commercial entertainer thanks to Superstar Rajinikanth. There’s humour, action, music and a star who continues to command the frame, though the writing occasionally loses its way especially in the second half. Ultimately, Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer 2 is a fun, engaging watch and with the promise of Jailer 3, the story of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is far from over.

Latha Srinivasan, film critic

That “fun, engaging watch” line is also the business case for a four-week clock. A crowd-pleaser can move to Prime while the meme cycle is still loud. An eight-week hold would have served the chains. It would not have served a studio that already booked the stream.

Canada Dates Pulled at York Cinemas

The overseas engine is not frictionless. On October 21, trade tracker Venky Box Office said Canada screenings would stop from October 22 because of money issues between distributors and the local York Cinemas chain. That is a booking fight of a different kind, and it lands just as the film heads into its second week with Hindi still missing from PVR INOX and Cinepolis in the North.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The six-day total: Sacnilk has India net at ₹287.80 crore, India gross at ₹337 crore, overseas at ₹204 crore and worldwide at ₹541 crore.
  • The Hindi lock: PVR INOX and Cinepolis are not playing the Hindi version in the North over the eight-week versus four-week gap.
  • The global weekend: Rentrak had Jailer 2 at $31.2 million and second worldwide for October 16 to 18.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Prime Video’s date: A November Diwali premiere in all languages is trade talk, not a dated studio notice.
  • Jailer 3: The public file is a critic’s line about a promise, not a plot, cast or release plan.
  • Sun Pictures’ own tally: The studio has not posted a matching official collection figure beside the tracker numbers.

York Cinemas is due to go dark on October 22. The first Jailer still sits at ₹604.74 crore worldwide for its full run, ₹63.74 crore ahead of the sequel’s six-day ₹541 crore, with Hindi multiplexes in the North still unlit.
