The New Apple TV 4K Makes Four HomePods the Real Spend
Apple’s new Apple TV 4K is $299, but the surround sound it advertised starts at $895 with four HomePod mini 2 speakers, while older boxes get Siri AI.
Apple priced the new Apple TV 4K at $299 on October 13, then tied its biggest claims to speakers, phones, and software the box does not include. Pre-orders opened the same day in the U.S. and 29 other countries and regions, with stores due to stock the hardware on Friday, November 13.
The headline feature is Siri AI, a beta assistant that can fill the screen with poster art, answer questions over a show, and take follow-ups without grabbing the remote. That assistant is also coming to Apple TV 4K units Apple has sold since 2021. The new money is for microphones, a faster chip, and a surround mode that needs four more products in the room.
Apple Dropped the Cheap Model and Kept the $299 Ask
Apple now sells one Apple TV 4K. It has 128GB of storage, gigabit Ethernet, Thread, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6 on every unit, and it ships with the new Siri Remote. The last generation split those extras across a Wi-Fi box and a costlier Ethernet box. After a June price rise, those two models had been selling at $199 and $249. The 2022 launch prices were $129 and $149, a gap people keep quoting because it is the number they remember, not the tag on the store page this fall.
The new box is $100 above that $199 Wi-Fi model and $50 above the old 128GB Ethernet model. Apple also offers Apple Card Monthly Installments at $49.83 a month for six months, which totals $298.98. Federico Viticci, a longtime Apple writer, put the tension in one line, writing that the Apple TV at $299 is too expensive, then arguing that the rest of the streaming-box market still looks worse.
Inside the enclosure, Apple put the A19 chip and three-microphone array that define this generation. Apple says the chip delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the A15 Bionic in the 2022 model, plus a dedicated AV1 decoder for leaner 4K streams. Video output is still 4K at 60 fps over HDMI 2.1. Dolby Vision now includes Profile 8.1 beside Profile 5, and the spec sheet adds VP9, HDMI Quick Media Switching, and 21:9 output on compatible projectors.
4TH GEN VERSUS THE 2022 BOX
| Spec | Apple TV 4K (4th gen) | Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. price | $299 | $199 Wi-Fi, $249 Ethernet (after June) |
| Chip | A19 | A15 Bionic |
| Storage | 128GB | 64GB or 128GB |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread | Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, Thread on 128GB only |
| Microphones | Three, with voice isolation | None listed |
| Four-speaker HomePod surround | Yes | No |
The chassis barely moved. Apple lists the new box at 1.22 by 3.67 by 3.67 inches and 217 grams, a few grams heavier than the last Ethernet model. HDMI still has to be bought separately. If you already like the picture on a 2022 unit, the format list is a weak reason to swap it.

Four HomePods Turn Surround Into an $895 Setup
Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, sold the box as a theater first and a streaming stick second. The surround mode is the part of that pitch that older Apple TVs cannot copy.
The new Apple TV 4K is our most immersive home theater experience yet. With Siri AI, finding something to watch becomes a full-screen, conversational experience, and with built-in far-field microphones, it’s completely hands-free. Pair it with HomePod for the best surround sound setup we’ve ever offered, and it makes managing your Apple Home accessories easier than ever.

Apple’s footnote is stricter than the quote. Four-speaker surround needs four HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini 2 units in matching front and rear pairs, plus this 4th generation Apple TV 4K on the latest software. Mix the models if you want, but each pair has to match. The original HomePod mini is not on the list.
Apple priced the $149 HomePod mini 2 on October 13, with stores due to get it on Friday, October 30, in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. The full-size HomePod is listed at $349. Add the $299 box and the cheapest legal surround layout is $895 before tax, stands, or mounts.
WHAT THE ADVERTISED SURROUND COSTS
| Layout | Speakers | With Apple TV 4K |
|---|---|---|
| Four HomePod mini 2 | $596 | $895 |
| Two HomePod plus two mini 2 | $996 | $1,295 |
| Four HomePod (2nd generation) | $1,396 | $1,695 |
Owners who already have two full-size HomePods can add a mini 2 pair and the new box for $597. Everyone else is shopping a sound system, not a $299 accessory. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, framed the box as the piece that “ties the whole home theatre together” with HomeView and HomePod mini 2, which is the honest product map: the streaming unit is the hub in a same-day home lineup, not a self-contained upgrade.
And the new Apple TV 4K ties the whole home theatre together!

HomePod mini 2 still needs a later software update for Siri AI, in the same English-language countries as the TV. The speaker can already run as a stereo pair, a Mac speaker, or part of multiroom audio. The four-speaker theater trick is the feature that forces a 4th generation Apple TV onto the receipt.
Older Apple TVs Get the Same Siri AI Beta
Siri AI on the TV is a software release, not a reason by itself to buy the new hardware. Apple says the beta runs in tvOS 27.2 on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). That covers the 2021 box with the A12 Bionic and the 2022 box with the A15 Bionic. People who bought those units for 4K, Dolby Atmos, and the Apple TV app get the new assistant when the update lands, using the Siri button on the remote.
The catch is not the chip in the old living-room box. It is the phone that owns the home. Apple says Siri AI on Apple TV requires the Home app owner to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad on the latest software, with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language. Personal-context requests, the ones that can play “the show Alinda recommended,” need a paired Apple Intelligence device as well.
That is why a 2021 Apple TV can talk like a 2026 Apple TV, and why a house without the right iPhone cannot. Apple’s own Siri AI device list starts at iPhone 15 Pro models, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone Air, plus iPads with M1 or later. The living-room hardware is downstream of that phone.
What Hands-Free Siri Requires
The new microphones are the cleanest hardware reason to replace a working Apple TV. Apple put three far-field mics in the box, with echo cancellation that is supposed to pick up “Siri” or “Hey Siri” while a movie is playing. Older models still need the remote. Far-field support also depends on the TV’s language setting, so a unit that can run Siri AI in English may still refuse hands-free wake words in a language Apple has not enabled for the mics.
GATES ON THE NEW SIRI
- English launch regions: The U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK, as a beta.
- Far-field languages: Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Norwegian, or Swedish as the primary tvOS language.
- Home owner: An Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad with Siri AI on, in a supported language, listed as the home owner in the Home app.
- EU phones: Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS, so an EU household that depends on that iPhone gate waits.
Apple can still sell the box in the EU. German stores are listing it at 349 euros. The mics are in the hardware either way. The full-screen assistant that Apple demonstrated with Emmy winners, filming locations for Pluribus, and age-appropriateness questions is the part that follows the phone’s region and language, not the HDMI port.
Microphone audio is processed in Secure Exclaves on the A19, isolated from tvOS and from Apple, according to the company. Siri requests can stay on the device or go through Private Cloud Compute, which Apple says does not store the data or hand it to the company. That is the privacy pitch for an always-listening square under the television. It does not change the shopping list.
Personal Context Still Lives on the iPhone
The demo lines in the press release only work if the rest of the house is already on Apple’s latest software. “Play the show Alinda recommended” is a personal-context request. Camera activity descriptions and summarized Home notifications need an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad, Location Services for the Home app, and a compatible hub, which this Apple TV 4K can be. HomeKit Secure Video descriptions also need an eligible iCloud+ plan, and the number of cameras Apple will describe depends on that plan: one on 2TB, two on 6TB, five on 12TB.
Apple announced HomeView at $299 and HomePod mini 2 on the same day, plus an Apple Home Collection that starts arriving in December. Borchers grouped the Apple TV with those products as “the most connected Apple Home we’ve ever built.” The streaming box is doing double duty as a Thread hub, a doorbell viewer, and a scene controller. None of that requires the new model if you already own a 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV 4K and a HomePod, except the four-speaker layout and the hands-free mics.
In June, Apple said it would not ship Siri AI on iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 in the European Union because of the Digital Markets Act, while still offering it on Mac and Apple Vision Pro there. Because the TV feature leans on the home owner’s phone, that delay travels into the living room even when the set-top box itself is on the shelf.
The $59 Remote Works on Every HDMI Apple TV
People who lose remotes got a smaller product that may matter more than the A19. The Siri Remote (4th generation) adds Find My with Precision Finding and a speaker that can play a sound. Apple’s store lists that remote at $59, and it is compatible with Apple TV HD and every Apple TV 4K, back to the 2015 HDMI model. Find My already existed on the Siri Remote (2nd generation or later). Playing a sound is exclusive to this remote. Precision Finding needs an iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e.
That $59 accessory is how Apple lets a 2017 or 2022 Apple TV owner pick up the one new trick that does not require a $299 box or four speakers. It ships on November 13 with the new TV. If the complaint about the box is that Siri AI should have been a software update, this is the SKU that behaves like one.
Apple Posted a Future Fee Without a Number
Siri AI is free at launch and already metered. Apple’s support documentation says certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, and it names Siri AI on that list. Limits “may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors.” Expanded access “will be available for a fee in the future.” Apple has not published the cap or the price.
On-device questions are the unlimited part of the pitch. The heavier requests, the ones that hit Apple’s servers, are the ones that can stop until the next day. A living-room assistant that is supposed to sit through a whole film of follow-up questions is the kind of use that runs into a cap Apple will not quantify. The fee, when it arrives, will sit on the same Apple Account as iCloud+, not on the $299 hardware receipt.
THE HOME HARDWARE CALENDAR
- October 13, 2026: Apple opens pre-orders for Apple TV 4K (4th generation) at $299 and HomePod mini 2 at $149.
- October 30, 2026: HomePod mini 2 reaches stores, 17 days before the TV it is meant to surround.
- November 13, 2026: Apple TV 4K (4th generation) and the $59 Siri Remote reach stores.
- December 2026: Apple Home Collection accessories begin to arrive, with some slipping into early 2027.
A household that wants the theater Apple showed has to buy in that order, speakers first, then the only Apple TV that will drive them as a four-speaker set. A household that wanted the new Siri on a television can wait for tvOS 27.2 on a box it already owns, if the phone in the Home app qualifies. The $299 product is real, and so is the A19, but the bill Apple wrote around it is four speakers, a recent iPhone, and a usage meter with a price still to come.
