Minecraft Snapshot 4 Puts Cracking Ice Over Cave Water

Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 4 covers Ice Cave crevasses with Brittle Ice that cracks underfoot, and finally lets a chest run a jukebox playlist.

Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 4 puts Brittle Ice over water in Ice Caves and lets a chest run a jukebox playlist. The Java Team shipped it on October 13, 2026, a week after Ice Caves landed on Java. The notes joke about a dance break. The floor of the new cave is the part that changes how you walk.

Bedrock Preview 26.70.20 went out the same day with the same two toys, and those notes are blunter about the pit under the ice. Testers already have a farm for the block, and a compact music queue that used to need a hopper clock.

Ice Caves Get a Cracking Lid Over Water

Brittle Ice is the new block. It generates only as part of the crevasse feature in Ice Caves, the cave biome Java received on October 6, 2026 in Snapshot 3. Step on it and it starts to crack, then it breaks. Silk Touch is the way to pick it up. The Java notes also say any water block that borders Blue Ice horizontally turns into Brittle Ice, so the cave find is not the only source.

The Minecraft Wiki’s Ice Caves page now describes crevasses on the floor as brittle ice with water below. Mojang’s Bedrock preview, written by Jay Wells, puts the same hazard in plainer language for anyone still treating the snapshot as a party trick.

They can cover crevasse openings, so you risk falling down a winding, narrow ravine that may or may not have water at the bottom.

Jay Wells, Minecraft Preview 26.70.20 notes

Those Bedrock notes add a number Java did not print. The block breaks after 3 cracks and does not melt. It throws small ice particles on the first crack and on the break, and it sends a Block Change vibration each time the crack level rises, then a Block Destroy vibration when it finally gives. Java’s resource pack added four stage textures, brittle_ice_0 through brittle_ice_3, which matches that three-crack ladder even if the Java changelog never counts the steps.

Ice, Frosted Ice, and Brittle Ice also stop drawing their inside faces when they sit next to each other, under a new #face_occluding_ice_blocks tag. The cave looks cleaner. The floor is still a lie.

Frostbite Walks Where Players Fall

The Frostbite, the zombie variant from Snapshot 3, can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it. Players cannot. Most other mobs cannot. That is the combat read of the new floor: the mob that already throws ice balls and applies Freezing can chase you onto a lid that will drop you into the crevasse.

Snapshot 3 had already given Frostbites two attack modes, immunity to Freezing, and the ability to stand on powder snow. They still burn in sunlight, and they still turn back into zombies if they stay underwater too long. Snapshot 4 does not retune those stats. It gives them a surface the rest of the cave does not get.

Datapacks can widen that exception. The new entity type tag #does_not_break_brittle_ice is the list of mobs that leave the lid intact. In vanilla that list is built for the Frostbite. A map can add more walkers without touching the block itself.

Drowned Now Convert in the Right Order

Ice Caves week left the zombie family in a mess in powder snow. Snapshot 4 closes the chain. Zombies, Drowned, and Husks are now immune to freezing and take no damage from the Freezing effect, which is the same courtesy Frostbites already had. Drowned in powder snow now turn into a Zombie first, then into a Frostbite, instead of dying on the way.

THE POWDER SNOW CONVERSION CHAIN

MobIn powder snowOn Brittle IceFreezing damage
FrostbiteStands on it; does not sinkWalks, does not break itImmune
ZombieConverts into a FrostbiteCracks itNow immune
HuskConverts into a ZombieCracks itNow immune
DrownedBecomes a Zombie, then a FrostbiteCracks itNow immune

Several Snapshot 3 bugs sat on that same loop. Frostbites could convert into themselves in powder snow. Husks and zombies took freeze damage before the conversion finished. Mobs that were supposed to be immune could still receive the Freezing effect. The tracker’s drowned dying in powder snow ticket is the blunt one: they were supposed to join the Frostbite line, and they were dying instead. Ice caves also join the #is_cave biome tag, a miss from the first Java cave snapshot.

Frosted Ice now emits a vibration when it changes state, so sculk can hear melt. Brittle Ice, in the Bedrock notes, is louder still: every crack is a Block Change ping.

After 16 Years, the Jukebox Takes a Chest

The other headline is the one Mojang led with. Place a single Chest, Trapped Chest, or any Copper Chest variant directly above a Jukebox, and the discs inside become a playlist. Java has had the jukebox since Alpha v1.0.14 on July 30, 2010. For 16 years a disc played once, then you had to pull it out and put it back.

Builders did not wait. The Minecraft Wiki still documents how hoppers already looped a single disc: the box emits a redstone signal of strength 15 while a track plays, which locks a hopper underneath, and when the song ends the hopper wakes up and steals the disc. A clock of hoppers and droppers could shove it back in, and a line of discs could fake a queue. The chest-on-top design throws that machine away. It is also a one-off. No other block in the game treats a chest sitting on it as a queue, which is why some testers already want the discs stored inside the jukebox itself.

The comparator read is still there. Each disc still maps to a signal strength, so a compact playlist can still drive lamps, doors, or a tiny computer. The next disc in the chest even shows a “Playing Next” tooltip. The box got new side and top textures, plus a jukebox_bottom.png that the old model never needed, because nobody was supposed to look under a chest.

HOW THE CHEST PLAYLIST RUNS

  • The container: One Chest, Trapped Chest, or Copper Chest variant must sit directly above the Jukebox.
  • Slot order: Discs play in inventory order, skipping empty slots and anything that is not a music disc, then loop to the start.
  • The swap: When a disc finishes, the Jukebox puts it back and pulls the next one from the chest.
  • Empty chest: If the chest has no discs, the disc already in the Jukebox plays again.
  • Skip: Ejecting the current disc jumps to the next available one.

The new block tag #jukebox_containers is the list of blocks the Jukebox will accept as that source. Vanilla points it at those chests. A datapack can point it at something else.

A Farm From Water and Blue Ice

Natural Brittle Ice is a cave feature. The craft is not. Water flowing onto Blue Ice, including a flowing block that only borders the ice on the side, becomes Brittle Ice. That is closer to an obsidian generator than to a rare find, and testers spent Snapshot 4 afternoon proving you can pour a stream and harvest with Silk Touch as fast as the ice sets.

That farm undercuts the crevasse as a scarce floor. You can still die in an Ice Cave if you trust the lid. You can also tile a trap hallway, a parkour line, or a mob drop in a base that never sees a frozen biome. The Bedrock notes compare the delay before the break to ice that is “still pretty sturdy.” People who wanted a true cave snare already called that delay generous. The Frostbite still does not care. It walks the same tiles you lined for a trap.

A Mojang testing post for Drop 4 of 2026 told players that wild Brittle Ice is likely covering a crevasse. In a Superflat or a creative plot, it is covering whatever you put under it.

How Wide Can a Crevasse Run?

The crevasse is a new worldgen feature type, not only a pretty crack in Ice Caves. It carves a winding, tapered cut that follows the terrain surface, grows in opposite directions from its placement point, and refuses to carve until it has a minimum connected footprint. Datapack authors get the dials. Vanilla Ice Caves use those dials to hide water under Brittle Ice. A custom dimension can hide something else.

CREVASSE FEATURE BOUNDS

FieldRangeWhat it sets
max_width2 to 8Maximum cross-section in blocks
max_length4 to 16Maximum end-to-end length
min_footprint1 to 32Connected floor required before carving
twistiness0.0 to 16.0Horizontal curvature
tapering0.0 to 1.0How fast the cut narrows
turn_factor0.0 to 1.0Rotation on each growth step

Carve depth and fill depth are integer providers, so the pit can be shallow water or a long drop. surface_block is the lid. fill_block is what sits at or below the fill depth. carvable_blocks and acceptable_barrier are predicates, which is how a pack keeps the feature from eating the wrong stone. The Data Pack version for this snapshot is 124.0. The Resource Pack version is 100.1, up from 100.0 in Snapshot 3.

Fluid types lost flowing_water and flowing_lava as separate types. A fluid now has a level from 1 to 8 and a source boolean. Sound fields for chickens, cows, cats, pigs, wolves, and sulfur cubes are optional, and the dummy event minecraft:intentionally_empty is gone. That is the quiet half of Snapshot 4, the part that never makes a thumbnail.

Four Snapshots Into Drop 4 of 2026

26.4 is the fourth game drop of 2026. The first two Java snapshots were engine work. Snapshot 3 was the cave, the Frostbite, icicles, ice crystals, ice balls, and the Freezing effect. Snapshot 4 is the lid on that cave, plus the playlist, plus a sound pass, plus 34 bug fixes on the Java Team list.

THE 26.4 SNAPSHOT LADDER

  1. September 22, 2026: Snapshot 1 makes Vulkan the default renderer and starts the 26.4 cycle.
  2. September 29, 2026: Snapshot 2 reworks render-distance fog and rebuilds the F3 screen.
  3. October 6, 2026: Snapshot 3 adds Ice Caves, Frostbites, icicles, ice crystals, and Freezing; data pack 123.0, resource pack 100.0.
  4. October 13, 2026: Snapshot 4 adds crevasses, Brittle Ice, and chest playlists; data pack 124.0, resource pack 100.1.

Ice, Packed Ice, Blue Ice, and Frosted Ice get their own break, step, hit, fall, and place events. Brittle Ice adds a crack event on top of that set. Packed Ice no longer has to share glass. Drowned converting to zombies get entity.drowned.converted_to_zombie. The Java notes also fix a pile of older sound bugs, including flint and steel on TNT, and they stop honey blocks from rejecting placements that slime blocks already allowed.

The same-day Java notes on Jukebox Playlists and Brittle Ice still open with “Happy Dance Break!” Snapshots stay behind the Installations tab in the launcher. They can still corrupt a world, so the backup warning is the same as it was in Snapshot 3. The new ice does not care whether you were dancing.
