The Same Weak Rupee Paid IT and Taxed the Nifty
Nifty 50 slipped 0.10 percent on October 14 as a 95 rupee fattened IT earnings while Indian crude at $127.04 kept foreign funds selling.
The Nifty 50 opened at 22,699.85 on October 14, down 0.10 percent, as Brent crude held $106.35 a barrel. The BSE Sensex 30 slipped 0.13 percent to 72,940.30 after information technology stocks had led the October 13 bounce, with HCL Technologies up 8.42 percent and Tata Consultancy Services up 6.79 percent.
The rupee was at 95.237 per dollar, 0.04 percent stronger on the dollar pair. That same 95-handle is what fattened the IT rupee profit-and-loss statements foreigners just cheered, and what turns a $106 Brent print into the barrel Indian refiners actually pay.
The Rupee That Paid TCS Also Priced the Oil Bill
Wire copy splits October 13 and October 14 into a rally and a pause. They are one trade. Exporters book dollars and report rupees, so a weaker rupee lifts INR sales even when dollar growth is slow. Importers buy oil in dollars, so the same rupee inflates the fuel bill, the current account and the inflation print that keeps the Reserve Bank of India tight.
HCL’s rupee revenue rose 11.5 percent from a year earlier while dollar revenue rose 2.2 percent. TCS showed the same gap: INR sales up 11.2 percent, dollar sales up 2.4 percent. That 9.3 percentage-point spread at HCL, and the 8.8-point spread at TCS, is translation, not a sudden boom in Western IT budgets.
THE EIGHT DAYS THAT PRICED THE OPEN
- October 7, 2026: The Monetary Policy Committee raises the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent and shifts the stance to calibrated tightening.
- October 8, 2026: TCS reports September-quarter results. The Indian crude basket, tracked by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, prints $127.04 a barrel.
- October 10, 2026: The RBI says it will sell dollars to Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum so those firms stop lifting the dollar in the open market every day.
- October 12, 2026: The oil-dollar window starts. HCLTech reports. The statistics ministry puts September retail inflation at 5.54 percent.
- October 13, 2026: IT stocks lead a bounce. Foreign investors still sell a net ₹1,305 crore in the cash market. The Nifty closes at 22,721.95, up 1.60 percent.
- October 14, 2026: The Nifty opens at 22,699.85, down 0.10 percent, with Brent at $106.35 and WTI at $94.76.
Gold traded at $4,185.76, up 0.21 percent, as the same mix of inflation, yields and oil kept a bid under the metal. The index open was a 22-point fade from the prior close, not a new story.

HCL’s 11.5% Rupee Jump Was a 2.2% Dollar Quarter
HCLTech, reporting on October 12 for the quarter ended September 30, posted Q2 revenue of ₹35,620 crore, up 3 percent from the June quarter and 11.5 percent from a year earlier. Dollar revenue was $3.7 billion, up 2.2 percent year on year. Constant-currency growth was 2.6 percent year on year and 2.3 percent quarter on quarter. Net income was ₹5,132 crore, up 11 percent sequentially and 21.2 percent year on year, and the EBIT margin reached 18.2 percent, up 131 basis points from June.
We delivered a strong quarter with new bookings of $3.3 billion, up 27% YoY, taking first half bookings to a record high. EBIT margin expanded 131 bps QoQ to 18.2%.
C Vijayakumar, CEO and Managing Director, HCLTech press release
Advanced AI revenue was $219 million for the quarter, or $876 million annualized, up 28.4 percent sequentially and 78 percent year on year in constant currency. The firm raised FY27 constant-currency revenue growth guidance to 2.5 percent to 4 percent and declared a ₹12 dividend. Chief financial officer Shiv Walia called the net income the company’s highest quarterly figure.
TCS, reporting on October 8, posted USD revenue of $7,642 million, up 0.2 percent sequentially and 2.4 percent year on year, and 0.5 percent in constant currency quarter on quarter. INR revenue was ₹73,188 crore, up 1.3 percent sequentially and 11.2 percent year on year. Operating margin held at 24.0 percent. Net profit was $1,450 million, for a 19.0 percent net margin. Annualized AI revenue of $3.1 billion crossed 10 percent of sales, and total contract value was $9.6 billion. Headcount was 598,056. The board set a ₹12 dividend with an October 14 record date.
CEO K Krithivasan said the firm was pleased with broad-based growth in international markets and most industry segments, and pointed to deals with Porsche AG and Best Buy. In dollar terms, both houses are growing in the low single digits. In rupees, both look like double-digit stories. The stock market paid the rupee version on October 13.
HOW THE TWO PRINTS COMPARE
| Item | TCS | HCLTech |
|---|---|---|
| INR revenue | ₹73,188 crore, +11.2% YoY | ₹35,620 crore, +11.5% YoY |
| USD revenue | $7,642 million, +2.4% YoY | $3.7 billion, +2.2% YoY |
| Margin | 24.0% operating | 18.2% EBIT |
| October 13 share move | +6.79% | +8.42% |
Wipro and Tech Mahindra report on October 15. Infosys reports on October 23. If those houses show the same INR-versus-USD split, the sector bid will keep looking larger in Mumbai than it does in New York.
Foreign Funds Have Sold ₹3,05,718 Crore This Year
National Securities Depository Ltd data through October 13 show foreign portfolio investors’ equity sales of ₹3,05,718 crore ($32.1 billion) in calendar 2026. October alone is already -₹45,416 crore, after -₹35,861 crore in September. The two-month burst reversed July and August, when foreigners bought ₹20,200 crore and ₹29,631 crore.
March was the worst month, at -₹1,17,775 crore. Across all FPI asset classes, the 2026 total is -₹2,51,276 crore. The Nifty is down 14.4 percent this year and the Sensex is down 15.60 percent, so October 13 was a bounce inside a drawdown, not a reset of the foreign bid.
FPI EQUITY FLOWS IN 2026
| Period | Net FPI equity (₹ crore) |
|---|---|
| July 2026 | +20,200 |
| August 2026 | +29,631 |
| September 2026 | -35,861 |
| October 2026 (through Oct 13) | -45,416 |
| Calendar 2026 total | -3,05,718 |
Domestic institutional investors have put in ₹6.83 lakh crore this year, more than twice the foreign equity selling, and they bought a net ₹2,439 crore on October 13 as foreigners sold ₹1,305 crore. Mutual-fund SIPs keep that domestic bid in place. They do not reprice the rupee, and they do not make a 5.2 percent US 10-year yield less attractive to a global allocator.
VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, has said the foreign selling is the main reason the Nifty has lagged, and that a US 10-year yield above 5.2 percent makes leaving India a rational trade. Vedant Gupte, co-founder of Trackk, has framed the outflows as a global shift toward the AI rally in North Asian markets rather than a verdict on India. Both can be true at once: the money left, and the Nifty still needs a buyer at 22,700.
What Indian Refiners Pay for a Barrel
Brent at $106.35 is the number on every open note. It is not the number on the refiners’ invoice. The Indian crude basket, a mix of Dated Brent and Oman-Dubai, stood at $127.04 on October 8, after averaging $116.04 in September. Freight, grade mix and the West Asia disruption sit in that gap.
India imports nearly 90 percent of its crude, IEEFA lead energy specialist Purva Jain wrote, and the crude import bill jumped 48 percent in April-August 2026 on almost the same volumes as a year earlier. ICRA has said a $10 per barrel rise in average crude over a fiscal year adds about $12 billion to $13 billion to net oil imports and widens the current account deficit by 0.3 percent of GDP. Jain’s note puts the FY27 current account near 1.5 percent of GDP, from 0.6 percent in FY26.
THE INDIAN BASKET VERSUS THE PUMP
- October 8 basket: The Indian crude basket printed $127.04 a barrel on the PPAC series.
- September average: The same basket averaged $116.04 a barrel in September.
- Brent on October 14: The global sweet benchmark traded at $106.35, up 0.66 percent, with WTI at $94.76.
- Delhi pump: Petrol was ₹102.12 a litre and diesel ₹95.20 on October 13, against petrol at ₹94.77 in April.
Oil marketing companies have been running under-recoveries of ₹8 a litre on petrol and ₹9 a litre on diesel, Jain noted, after receiving ₹1.23 trillion of support in the first 78 days of the latest shock. SBI Research, in an October 12 Ecowrap, said its model points to Brent near $110 and the Indian basket near $130 over 10 trading days. That would keep the rupee on the defensive even if the Nifty finds another IT print to cheer.
Maruti and the Stocks That Sat Out Tuesday
The October 13 session was not a broad risk-on day. It was a sector bid. Shriram Finance rose 6.31 percent alongside the IT names. The Nifty 50 names that went the other way were domestic: Kotak Mahindra Bank fell 0.99 percent, Eternal fell 0.79 percent, and Maruti Suzuki India fell 0.62 percent.
Maruti’s slip on an up day is the oil story in one ticker. Fuel, freight and the household budget for a car all move with the Indian basket, not with HCL’s bookings. Banks face a central bank that has already lifted the repo to 5.50 percent and told markets the next step is a hike or a pause, not a cut.
OCTOBER 13 INSIDE THE NIFTY 50
| Stock | Move | Role in the split |
|---|---|---|
| HCL Technologies | +8.42% | Dollar exporter, rupee reporter |
| Tata Consultancy Services | +6.79% | Dollar exporter, rupee reporter |
| Shriram Finance | +6.31% | Domestic gainer on the same tape |
| Kotak Mahindra Bank | -0.99% | Rate-sensitive lender |
| Eternal | -0.79% | Domestic consumer name |
| Maruti Suzuki India | -0.62% | Auto name tied to fuel costs |
A 0.10 percent index open the next morning is what that mix produces when Brent holds $106.35 and foreigners are still in month-to-date deficit. The IT bid can lift a session. It cannot lift the import bill.
The RBI Now Sells Dollars Straight to Oil Firms
On October 10 the Reserve Bank of India opened a special window for public sector oil companies, effective October 12 and open until further notice. Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum will buy their daily dollars from the central bank through designated banks, rather than in the spot market.
On the basis of assessment of current market conditions, Reserve Bank of India has decided to open a special window to meet the entire daily dollar requirements of three public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs), viz. Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
Brij Raj, Chief General Manager, Reserve Bank of India press release, October 10, 2026
The window moves a large, regular dollar bid off the screen. It does not shrink the barrel. A $127.04 Indian basket still has to be paid, whether the dollars come from the RBI’s book or from the interbank market. Derivative curbs that accompanied the rupee defence, including a cash reserve on large dollar-buying hedges and a cut in the unbacked FX limit from $100 million to $5 million, make speculation dearer. They also tell you the central bank is fighting the currency, not the oil shock.
Taking oil dollars off-screen can steady USD/INR for a few sessions, which is why the pair could print 95.237 on October 14 instead of another slide toward 96. It cannot turn a 2.2 percent dollar growth quarter into a reason for foreigners to reverse ₹3,05,718 crore of equity selling. The rupee still has to fund the cargo.
Inflation at 5.54% Leaves Little Room for Rate Relief
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation put September CPI at 5.54 percent, with food inflation at 7.74 percent. Rural inflation was 6.08 percent and urban inflation 4.88 percent, up from a final August reading of 4.83 percent. The print is a 23-month high and the fourth straight month above the RBI’s 4 percent target, though still inside the 6 percent upper band.
The October 7 policy statement projected CPI at 5.2 percent for 2026-27, with 6.0 percent in the December quarter and 5.7 percent in the March quarter. That path is why the repo is at 5.50 percent and why a 0.10 percent Nifty dip after an IT bounce does not invite a rate-cut bid. Gold at $4,185.76 fits the same tape: inflation is high, oil is high, and the rupee still needs defending.
Wipro and Tech Mahindra report on October 15, Infosys on October 23. Those prints can extend the exporter bounce if rupee translation and AI bookings again outrun dollar growth. They will not reprice a $127.04 cargo or a -₹45,416 crore October for foreigners. Until the Indian basket comes in, the Nifty’s ceiling is the oil bill, and the floor is whoever in Mumbai is still buying what the rest of the world is selling.
