RGV Brings Harshvardhan Rane Into the Old Encounter Squad Story
Ram Gopal Varma mounts Police Company as a T-Series biopic of encounter specialist Daya Nayak.
Ram Gopal Varma has cast Harshvardhan Rane as former Mumbai Police officer Daya Nayak in the T-Series crime drama Police Company, a project the director framed with the tagline It Is More Dangerous Than D Company. The film draws on the special squad that killed more than 300 gangsters between 1997 and 2004 after the Dawood Ibrahim-Chhota Rajan split left a power vacuum in the city’s underworld.
Varma posted the announcement and look images on 10 August 2026. Pre-production is under way and cameras are due in the third week of August. A huge ensemble cast remains unannounced.
The Squad That Cleared More Than 300
Varma laid out the backdrop in his own words. After Dawood finished most rival gangs he turned D-Company into a money-making organisation and left for Dubai, leaving Chhota Rajan in charge. The later split created chaos. Other gangs moved in. Young men from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar flooded the ranks. The system failed to stop it.
In response Mumbai Police stood up a special squad. Varma wrote that between 1997 and 2004 the unit killed more than 300 gangsters. Police Company tells the story of that squad through one of its best-known members, Daya Nayak, played by Rane.
| Figure | Detail |
|---|---|
| Squad period cited by Varma | 1997-2004 |
| Gangsters killed (Varma figure) | More than 300 |
| Daya Nayak personal tally (media range) | Around 80-87 |
| Nayak last use of service revolver | 2004 |
Nayak joined the force as a sub-inspector in 1995 after arriving from Udupi, Karnataka, as a teenager who worked hotel jobs and finished school in Mumbai. His first major notice came in a 1996 Juhu encounter with Chhota Rajan associates. He rose through the Detection Unit, the group also called the encounter squad, that media and later cinema turned into urban legend.

Varma Circles Back to His Company Roots
This is not new ground for the director. Satya (1998) and Company (2002) defined a raw Mumbai underworld style that still echoes. Varma produced Ab Tak Chhappan (2004), in which Nana Patekar played Inspector Sadhu Agashe, a character modelled on Daya Nayak. Other films, from the Kannada Encounter Daya Nayak to Telugu Golimaar, borrowed pieces of the same life.
- Ab Tak Chhappan (2004), produced by Varma, Patekar as Nayak-inspired lead
- Company (2002), Varma’s own underworld ensemble with Vivek Oberoi as a Chhota Rajan figure
- Later titles including Department and various regional encounter dramas
Bollywood Hungama reported that Police Company is positioned as a revival of the Company franchise label yet stands completely alone with no shared plot. Varma had tried for years to mount a fuller Nayak biopic. The project regained speed after another crime script, Syndicate, stalled on budget. T-Series and RGV Company are producing; Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar join Varma as producers. Trade notes call it the first collaboration between Bhushan Kumar and Varma.
Rane Leaves Romance for the Encounter Role
For Rane the part marks a sharp turn. His 2025 romantic drama Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat emerged as a sleeper hit, with India nett figures reported in the 80-crore range and worldwide higher. Earlier work included the gangster turn in Taish and the re-release success of Sanam Teri Kasam. He now heads into Milap Zaveri’s Uniform, Omung Kumar’s Silaa, and Force 3 opposite John Abraham.
Career markers at announcement
- Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat (2025), commercial breakthrough after years of mixed results
- Next lined, Uniform, Silaa, Force 3
- Police Company, first lead under Varma, first full encounter-biopic role
Hungama sources said Rane has long wanted to work with Varma. The first trial looks show him with the thick moustache and hard stare associated with Nayak’s public image. Varma posted three additional stills the same day as the title reveal.
Controversies That Travel With the Legend
Nayak’s reputation always carried two sides. Media called him an encounter specialist; he repeatedly rejected the label, saying he followed orders and the law. In 2004 a MCOCA court ordered an Anti-Corruption Bureau probe into alleged disproportionate assets. Raids followed. Reports mentioned luxury bus fleets in Mumbai and Karnataka. He was arrested, fought the case for years, and was reinstated in 2012. He continued service into the Anti-Terrorism Squad and received a promotion to ACP on the eve of retirement around mid-2025.
What We Know
- Personal encounter count widely cited near 80-87
- ACB case ended in acquittal after evidence shortfalls
- Last revolver shot fired in 2004; the weapon stayed on his desk for years
- Book excerpts and interviews describe the jump from village boy and waiter to cult status
What’s Unconfirmed for the Film
- How deeply the script will treat the ACB chapter or internal police politics
- Final ensemble names and supporting real-life officers
- Exact release window beyond the August start of shoot
An NDTV book excerpt notes the revolver silent for 21 years after that final 2004 encounter. Older reporting on the wider Mumbai encounter squad history shows officers who became household names and later faced their own legal and political reckonings. Varma’s tagline already signals he intends to examine how extra powers turn an institution into something that behaves like a company.
T-Series Scale and the First Images
T-Series amplified the launch on 11 August with its own post and first-look images of Rane as Nayak. The studio copy called it a story from an era that changed Mumbai. Engagement on Varma’s original thread topped 465,000 views and 5,000 likes within a day. Trade accounts highlighted the Bhushan Kumar partnership as a signal of bigger commercial intent than some of Varma’s recent smaller outings.
Crowd conversation on X mixed nostalgia for the grit of Satya and Company with caution. Portraying a living, polarising real officer is harder than inventing a fictional Sadhu Agashe. Rane’s romantic-image base will have to accept a harder physical and moral register. Some posts simply noted the return of the encounter template at a moment when the last of those officers have left active service.
What the August Floor Date Already Shows
Shooting is scheduled to begin in the third week of August 2026. That pace after a long gestation suggests the script and Rane’s look are locked. Varma still has the Manoj Bajpayee horror-comedy Police Station Mein Bhoot in the pipeline, so the two police-titled projects sit side by side for now.
Police Company arrives as both a career pivot for its lead and a deliberate return for its director to the blood-and-bureaucracy terrain that once made him essential. The real Daya Nayak’s numbers, the squad’s 300-plus tally, the old ACB files and the new first-look stills all sit on the table. Whether the finished film treats the “company” critique as sharp edge or marketing line will be visible only after the cameras roll and the cut lands.
