Jana Nayagan Hits 157 Crore Net as Farewell Hype Meets Reality
Vijay’s Jana Nayagan reaches 157 crore India net and 268 crore worldwide by day 9, a solid total undercut by budget scale, A rating and weekday freefall.
Jana Nayagan collected a final 3.55 crore India net on day 9 across 4,165 shows, lifting the film’s domestic net past 157 crore and worldwide gross to 268.45 crore. Vijay’s farewell action drama entered its second weekend with Tamil Nadu still carrying the bulk of the load.
Trade trackers logged the day as a 12.3 percent drop from day 8’s 4.05 crore net. Evening and night shows in core markets kept occupancy near 20 percent overall, enough to clear the 150 crore India net mark comfortably earlier in the week.
Day Nine Lands at 3.55 Crore Net
Sacnilk’s final tally shows the Day 9 net of 3.55 crore came with India gross at 183.45 crore and overseas adding another 2 crore that day for an 85 crore foreign total. The worldwide figure sat at 268.45 crore after nine days.
Early live reports from the same day had shown lower figures around 1.23 crore with partial shows. Final numbers firmed once night occupancy in Chennai, Coimbatore and Trichy filled in. The film ran fewer than half the shows it commanded in week one.
The daily arc from the opening burst to the second Friday is now fully visible. Day 1’s 42.70 crore remains the high-water mark. By day 9 the net had settled into single digits for the fifth straight session, yet the 20 percent occupancy held the floor above the 3 crore line.
| Day | India Net (Cr) | Shows | Occupancy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (Thu) | 42.70 | 13,067 | 41.6% |
| Day 2 (Fri) | 21.15 | 12,190 | 29.5% |
| Day 3 (Sat) | 28.90 | 12,299 | 38.7% |
| Day 4 (Sun) | 32.00 | 12,107 | 44.7% |
| Day 5 (Mon) | 10.65 | 10,436 | 21.7% |
| Day 6 (Tue) | 8.00 | 10,413 | 19.8% |
| Day 7 (Wed) | 6.10 | 10,359 | 15.7% |
| Day 8 (Thu) | 4.05 | 5,496 | 16.9% |
| Day 9 (Fri) | 3.55 | 4,165 | 20.0% |
| Total | 157.10 | – | – |
Week one alone delivered 153.55 crore net. The second Friday held better than some feared after the midweek slide, yet the absolute numbers remain far below the opening burst.
Show count tells the same story in reverse. The film commanded more than 12,000 shows across the first four days. By day 9 that footprint had shrunk to 4,165, less than a third of the launch scale. Occupancy recovered slightly from day 8’s 16.9 percent to 20 percent, but the smaller base limited the rupee gain.

The Factors That Cut the Opening Rush
Several headwinds arrived before and during release. An A certificate restricted family audiences. An online leak circulated days earlier. Multiple postponements cooled advance bookings. Day 8 also collided with the global rollout of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which pulled screens and tickets in national chains.
- Show count fell from over 10,000 midweek to 5,496 on day 8 and 4,165 on day 9.
- National chains (PVR, INOX, Cinepolis) saw sharp ticket drops once the Marvel title arrived.
- Word of mouth stayed mixed; user scores on tracking sites hovered near 4.8/10.
- Cauvery-related protests forced some Karnataka cancellations around the same window.
Fans on X noted the gap between the “one last time” emotion and the actual opening, which missed top-five Tamil first-day records and never approached the 30 crore Tamil Nadu single-day mark some expected. One widely shared take framed leaks, poor word of mouth and postponements as the direct causes of the muted start.
Each factor compounded the next. The A certificate narrowed the addressable audience before the first ticket sold. The leak eroded the urgency that usually drives opening-day premium pricing. Postponements stretched the marketing cycle until advance interest cooled. When Spider-Man arrived on day 8, the national chains already held a thinner inventory of Jana Nayagan shows and simply shifted the remaining slots.
The result was a launch that cleared solid absolute numbers yet never matched the event scale the pre-release campaign had promised. Mixed user scores near 4.8/10 gave casual viewers little reason to override the other obstacles.
Tamil Version Carries Nearly Everything
Language split after nine days left little doubt about the engine. Tamil contributed 134.45 crore net. Hindi added 13.90 crore. Telugu sat at 8.75 crore. On day 9 itself Tamil alone delivered 3.20 crore of the 3.55 crore total while Hindi managed 0.30 crore and Telugu 0.05 crore.
| Language | Nine-Day Net (Cr) | Day 9 Net (Cr) |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil | 134.45 | 3.20 |
| Hindi | 13.90 | 0.30 |
| Telugu | 8.75 | 0.05 |
State-wise gross on day 9 underlined the same pattern: Tamil Nadu 3.25 crore, Karnataka 0.27 crore, Kerala 0.20 crore, rest of India 0.35 crore, Andhra-Telangana 0.05 crore. Cumulative state gross put Tamil Nadu above 108 crore, more than half the all-India gross.
Chennai occupancy on day 9 hit 37.3 percent across 429 shows, with night shows above 55 percent. Pondicherry and Trichy also stayed strong. Outside the core belt the numbers thinned quickly.
The concentration is stark once the shares are lined up. Tamil supplied roughly six times the combined Hindi and Telugu total. On day 9 the imbalance grew sharper still: Tamil delivered more than 90 percent of that day’s net. Rest-of-India and the two southern neighbours together could not match a single strong Chennai night.
That narrow geographic base keeps the daily floor intact inside Tamil Nadu yet caps the upside the moment screens outside the core belt are lost to competing titles. The film’s second-weekend fate therefore hinges almost entirely on whether Chennai, Coimbatore and Trichy can still fill seats.
How It Stacks Against Leo and The GOAT
Jana Nayagan’s first-week India net of roughly 153 crore sits below recent Vijay benchmarks. Leo and Jailer opened far stronger. The Greatest of All Time also outpaced it in the early window. Trackers placed the film’s first six-day Tamil net outside the all-time top five.
Overseas tells a brighter story. At 85 crore gross the title became 2026’s highest overseas earner among tracked titles, edging past earlier marks near 81 crore. North America alone had already crossed 1.45 million dollars by midweek. Diaspora turnout gave the farewell a second life that domestic Hindi and Telugu versions could not match.
In pure India net terms the film is tracking toward a mid-tier finish among Vijay’s recent output, not the career-topping send-off many predicted.
The contrast between territories is now the defining feature of the run. Domestic trackers measure the film against Leo, Jailer and The Greatest of All Time and find it short. Overseas trackers measure it against every 2026 release and find it first. That split explains why the worldwide gross of 268.45 crore still looks respectable even while the India net conversation remains muted.
North America’s early 1.45 million dollars supplied a meaningful share of the foreign total. The same diaspora audiences that lifted the overseas crown had limited ability to move the Hindi or Telugu needles inside India. The farewell emotion travelled farther abroad than the dubbed versions did at home.
KVN’s Big Outlay Meets the Math
Production house KVN Productions backed the film heavily. Multiple industry reports put the budget in the reportedly made on a budget of 300-350 crore range, with some estimates touching 380 crore. Vijay’s fee alone drew claims above 200 crore in trade chatter.
At 268 crore worldwide after nine days the theatrical recovery remains incomplete once distributor shares, P&A and the high print cost are factored. Satellite, digital and music deals will close the gap, yet the theatrical leg alone looks unlikely to deliver a clean profit on the upper budget estimates.
The same banner has several other large-scale titles in the pipeline. A soft theatrical for the Vijay farewell raises the pressure on those later releases.
Simple arithmetic shows the distance still to cover. Even if the full worldwide gross were treated as pure producer share, the upper budget estimates would remain out of reach. After the standard cuts for distributors, exhibitors and prints, the theatrical return sits further below the reported outlay. Non-theatrical windows must therefore carry a larger share of the break-even load than a pure event film usually requires.
That math lands on KVN’s upcoming slate. Each later title will now be read against the farewell’s theatrical shortfall, tightening the margin for error on budgets and release timing alike.
Screens Drop as Marvel Hits
Day 8’s show reduction to 5,496 was the clearest signal of competition. Spider-Man sold nearly 6 lakh tickets in the same national chains that day. Jana Nayagan’s chain ticket sales fell to roughly 11,000. The pattern continued into day 9 with further screen losses.
Core single-screen and multiplex pockets in Tamil Nadu absorbed the hit better than multiplex-heavy Hindi circuits. Occupancy in Chennai night shows still cleared 50 percent even as overall counts shrank. That resilience kept the daily net from collapsing below 3 crore.
Limited new Tamil competition in the second weekend offers a window. Whether audiences return in volume will decide if the film can push past 300 crore worldwide or stall near current levels.
The ticket gap inside the national chains illustrates the scale of the diversion. Spider-Man’s nearly 6 lakh tickets dwarfed Jana Nayagan’s roughly 11,000 in the same circuits on day 8. Once those chains reassigned screens, the film’s remaining strength lived almost entirely in the single-screen and local multiplex network that Marvel does not dominate.
Chennai’s night occupancy above 55 percent on day 9 proved that core demand had not vanished. It had simply been compressed into fewer shows. The second weekend will test whether that compressed demand can expand again once the Marvel opening heat cools.
What the Second Weekend Can Still Add
Trade eyes now sit on Saturday and Sunday. A typical second-weekend bounce of 30-50 percent over Friday would add 10-15 crore net across the two days. Stronger holds in Chennai and Coimbatore could lift that further. Weakness outside Tamil Nadu will cap the upside.
The film has already secured several milestones: 50 crore net on day 1, 100 crore net by first Sunday, 150 crore net by day 8, 100 crore gross inside Tamil Nadu, and the 2026 overseas crown. Those markers survive even if the final total lands short of the most optimistic pre-release forecasts.
Director H. Vinoth’s cast, led by Vijay with Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and others, plus Anirudh Ravichander’s score, delivered the content. The business outcome now rests on whether farewell emotion can still fill seats once the opening dust settles. Sacnilk’s running total already shows India net collections to 157.10 crore with worldwide at 268.45 crore. The next 48 hours will set the ceiling.
Overseas Gross Claims the 2026 Crown
While domestic conversation stays fixed on the gap to Leo and The Greatest of All Time, the foreign total has already rewritten the 2026 leaderboard. At 85 crore overseas gross the film sits clear of the previous tracked high near 81 crore.
That crown arrived early. North America crossed 1.45 million dollars by midweek, giving the worldwide number a steady overseas drip even as India net settled into the low single crores. Day 9 itself still added 2 crore from foreign markets.
Diaspora audiences treated the release as a farewell event in a way the Hindi and Telugu circuits inside India did not. The same emotion that failed to push Tamil Nadu to a 30 crore single-day peak proved durable enough abroad to lock a yearly record. The overseas leg therefore functions as both a financial cushion and a reputational counterweight to the softer domestic trajectory.
Any second-weekend bounce will be measured first in India net, yet the worldwide race past 300 crore depends equally on whether foreign holds remain steady once the opening week’s diaspora wave fully recedes.
Later Pipeline Titles Face Fresh Pressure
KVN Productions now carries the farewell’s theatrical math into every subsequent big-budget call. The banner’s reported 300-350 crore outlay, with some estimates at 380 crore, has not been fully recovered at the ticket window after nine days.
Satellite, digital and music rights remain available to close the gap. Those deals, however, are negotiated against final theatrical performance. A softer-than-hoped cinema run weakens the leverage on the remaining windows and compresses the profit margin that was meant to fund the next cycle of large-scale titles.
The pressure is structural rather than sentimental. Each later release will open under closer scrutiny of budget discipline and release timing. The Vijay farewell was intended as a high-water commercial mark. Instead it has become the reference point against which the banner’s remaining slate will be judged.
For a star exiting cinema the numbers are respectable. For a film built and marketed as an event they remain a reminder that hype, leaks and certificates still write the final ledger.
