Packed Ice Bricks Close Minecraft’s Winter Cave Building Gap

Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 5 adds Packed Ice Bricks to Ice Caves, a Frostbite Ice Ball advancement, and an experimental Windows DirectX option.

Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 5 adds Packed Ice Bricks, the masonry set Ice Caves were missing when that biome landed two weeks earlier. The Java Team published the Java Edition snapshot on October 20, 2026, with a Stonecutter-ready ice brick family, a Frostbite advancement, and an experimental Windows display toggle.

The notes still warn that testing versions can corrupt a world, so the usual extra folder and a backup still apply before you click Play.

Packed Ice Bricks Finally Fill the Masonry Gap

The Java Team put the new family in front of the rest of the changelog, and the recipe is small. Packed Ice Bricks and Stonecutter variants start from a 2×2 of Packed Ice on the crafting grid, then split into slab, stair, wall, and chiseled forms.

In 26.4 Snapshot 5, we’re introducing Packed Ice Bricks, including a bunch of variants, and YES, they work in the Stonecutter!

Packed Ice Bricks and Chiseled Packed Ice use the same fast-sliding behavior as Sulfur Cubes, so a castle floor still throws you the way a packed-ice highway does. That is the detail builders have wanted from ice masonry for years, and it is why a stair here is not the same as a stair in stone.

On December 31, 2022, a post on Mojang’s feedback site asked for packed ice stairs, walls, and chiseled bricks because the game already had stone, nether, and deepslate brick families and no ice version. The writer wanted a blue stair that still slid, for an ice castle or an ice museum. Snapshot 5 ships that palette.

The new face still uses a small brick grid that rhymes with Tuff Bricks more than with carved ice, so a wall of it will sit next to existing stone brick builds without a jump in scale. A medium module closer to Mud Bricks is not in this snapshot. Ice Balls, which Frostbites drop in volume, also do not craft back into Packed Ice, so the new recipe still runs through silk-touched cave ice rather than through the mob you farm for the advancement.

Ice Caves Opened Without a Brick Set

When Ice Caves and the Frostbite mob landed in 26.4 Snapshot 3 on October 6, 2026, the biome was already a packed-ice place. The Java Team described caves that generate under colder Overworld biomes, built mainly of Packed Ice and Calcite, with hanging icicles, large packed-ice icicles, snow patches, ore pockets in stone and deepslate, and ice crystals on the ground.

Strays and Frostbites spawn there on top of ordinary cave mobs. Glow Lichen does not. Icicles can grow up to 5 blocks long when they point down, only in dark air outside the Nether, and they hurt when they fall or when something lands on the tip. Ice crystals emit light and break if their support goes, in the same family as amethyst clusters.

None of that gave you a stair, a slab, a wall, or a chiseled brick. You could walk a packed-ice floor, dodge a crevasse later, and still have to clad a shelter in stone brick if you wanted trim. Snapshot 3 even let snow sit on Packed Ice, which made the caves look finished as terrain and unfinished as a building set.

Frostbites made the same gap feel sharper in combat. The frozen zombie variant throws Ice Balls, swaps between melee and range by distance, applies Freezing on a melee hit, and stands on Powder Snow without sinking. Zombies and Husks that linger in Powder Snow become Frostbites. The caves had a mob, a projectile, and a status effect. They did not have a brick.

Four Snapshots Built the Ice Cave Kit

26.4 has been a weekly Java snapshot train since the Snapshot 1 article on September 22, 2026. The winter pieces that matter for this drop stacked on three Tuesdays in October, and Snapshot 5 is the one that lets you build in the same material the caves are made of.

The Java Team tied Snapshot 3 to Minecraft LIVE’s first look at the next game drop, called it frosty, and pointed players at the Winter 26 game drop feedback site. Snapshot 5 is still that drop in testing, not a full release.

THE ICE KIT IN 26.4

  1. October 6, 2026: Snapshot 3 adds Ice Caves, Ice Crystals, Icicles, the Frostbite, the Freezing effect, and the Ice Ball, and lets snow sit on Packed Ice.
  2. October 13, 2026: Snapshot 4 adds Brittle Ice in ice-cave crevasses, Jukebox playlists from a chest above the box, and custom break, step, and place sounds for Ice, Packed Ice, Blue Ice, and Frosted Ice.
  3. October 20, 2026: Snapshot 5 adds Packed Ice Bricks with slab, stair, wall, and chiseled forms, the What Goes Around Comes Around advancement, ambient Ice under a strict neighbor rule, and Prefer DXGI Present on Windows.

Brittle Ice is the trap floor in that kit, not the masonry. It generates in Ice Caves as part of the crevasse feature, cracks under players and most mobs, and is silk-touch only. Frostbites can walk it without breaking it. Water that touches Blue Ice on a horizontal face turns into Brittle Ice, so a blue-ice build can grow a crust you did not place.

Seven days after that trap floor, the Stonecutter finally cuts Packed Ice into brick trim. That is the sequence the Snapshot 5 notes do not recap, and it is why the brick drop reads larger than a weekly texture.

Killing a Frostbite With an Ice Ball

Earn the new Adventure advancement What Goes Around Comes Around by killing a Frostbite with an Ice Ball, the same projectile the mob throws. The Java Team framed it as fighting ice with ice. The ball already existed in Snapshot 3; Snapshot 5 is the first time the game pays you for throwing it back.

THE FROSTBITE COMBAT LOOP

  • The mob: A zombie variant that spawns in cold and icy biomes, including Ice Caves, and can stand on Powder Snow.
  • The melee: Close hits apply Freezing, which makes players shake and later take damage as if they were in Powder Snow.
  • The Ice Ball: A ranged hit deals 4 damage, scales down with velocity, applies knockback, and breaks on blocks or entities.
  • The drop: Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls, which also brew lingering, splash, and drinkable Potions of Freezing.
  • The tell: It is immune to freezing and is not slowed by Freezing or Powder Snow, and it turns into a Zombie if it stays underwater long enough.

Leather armor still protects against freezing the way it does in Powder Snow, but it will not stop the effect from being applied and will not strip it. Mobs that are vulnerable to Freezing take a 5 times multiplier on that damage. Arrows of Freezing are a lingering potion in the middle of eight arrows on the grid.

Snapshot 4 already made Zombies, Drowned, and Husks immune to freezing damage, and it made a Drowned turn into a Zombie before it can become a Frostbite in Powder Snow. Snapshot 5’s advancement sits on top of that conversion chain. You farm Ice Balls from the thing you are trying to kill with Ice Balls, which is why the title writes itself.

The ball is still a weak projectile on purpose. At 4 damage it is a poke with knockback, not a snowball replacement for a bow, and it is enough to close the advancement if you pick the balls up and fire them back before the Frostbite closes in.

Frostbites Spawned in the Wrong Caves

The spawn rules for the new zombie were still leaking into ordinary caves under cold biomes. Snapshot 5 adds the biome tag #spawns_ice_variants_underground for cold variants that should appear without sky access, and it renames spawns_strays_without_powder_snow to spawns_cold_variants_underground after the old name was logged as making no sense.

MC-312404 is the player-facing bug in that pile: Frostbites could generate in normal caves under cold biomes, unlike Strays. The same snapshot also puts Ice Caves into the worldgen wiring they were missing, including ruined portals that failed to generate there and the #stronghold_biased_to biome tag that had left the new caves out.

SNAPSHOT 5 VERSION BUMP

  • Data pack: Version 125.0, up from 124.0 in Snapshot 4 and 123.0 in Snapshot 3.
  • Resource pack: Version 100.2, with new sprites for packed_ice_bricks and chiseled_packed_ice.
  • Bug list: 30 fixes, from projectile griefing in Adventure to jukebox playlists that pulled from the wrong chest.
  • DXGI default: Off, Windows only, marked experimental.

Mobs can again break Decorated Pots, Chorus Flowers, and Speleothem blocks with projectiles in an Adventure world, unless mob_griefing is false, which restores the break behavior that Snapshot-era projectile rules had taken away. Effect immunity is no longer a single tag that only honored one listing: #ignores_poison_and_regen splits into #immune_to_poison and #immune_to_regeneration, with new #immune_to_wither, #immune_to_weakness, and #immune_to_freezing names, after Zombies, Husks, Drowned, Strays, and Frostbites had started taking Poison and Regeneration.

Older debris in the same list includes flowing fluids that broke blocks with no particles or sound, a snowy shepherd house that never generated, and Creakings that kept attacking after a player moved to Creative. Those are not winter-drop features. They are the cost of shipping a cave biome, a new zombie, and a jukebox playlist in the same month.

Prefer DXGI Present Stays Off by Default

Buried under the bricks is a Windows-only video setting named Prefer DXGI Present. It tries to present the game through DirectX. It does not exist on other systems, it does not run on all hardware, and the default is off.

The default is off, and we consider this option “experimental” – it may not work for everyone.

Java Team, Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 5 video settings

With DXGI on, the Java Team says you may see better IME support, Variable Refresh Rate support, and faster alt-tabbing in fullscreen. That is a presentation-path change, not a new render distance, and it is the kind of toggle that will split Windows players into “leave it off” and “this finally made Japanese input and a 144 Hz panel behave.”

The login protocol is the other plumbing change, and it is aimed at servers. Encryption and compression must now be applied on purpose. The server sends minecraft:login_finished or minecraft:apply_options, the client answers with a matching acknowledgement, and only then do later packets use the new settings. The old path applied the change on both sides at once and could leave malformed packets on the wire. MC-308621, a race in the dedicated server’s compression setup, is in the same snapshot’s fix list.

Consumable and equippable data components also make their sound fields fully optional, defaulting to generic eat, armor equip, and shears snip if a pack leaves them out. Density functions rename interpolated to upscale and expose sampling modes from nearest neighbor through b-spline cubic. Those lines are for pack authors. They will not show up in an Ice Cave screenshot, and they are why a snapshot that looks like a brick drop still bumps the data pack to 125.0.

Ice Blocks Now Hum Over Water

Regular Ice now has a chance to emit an ambient sound when the neighborhood is right: at least 8 Ice blocks in all horizontal directions, one Air block above, and one Water block below. That is a thin, specific rule. A decorative ice floor over a lake can tick; a lonely ice patch in a tundra cannot.

Snapshot 4 had already added custom sounds for the ice family, including a block.ice.ambient event in the resource pack. Snapshot 5 is the one that says when ordinary Ice is allowed to use it. Packed Ice Bricks do not get that neighbor rule in the notes. They get the slide.

Adventure-mode projectile griefing, ice-cave portal placement, and Frostbite spawn tags are the unglamorous half of making the new biome feel like it belongs in the Overworld. The brick set is the half you will screenshot. Together they turn a cave that was terrain on October 6, 2026 into a place you can trim with stairs on October 20, 2026.

On October 21, 2026, at least one server host was already listing a Vanilla 26.4-snapshot-5 runtime, with a warning that a world opened in the snapshot might not load cleanly again in 26.3. The launcher path is unchanged: enable snapshots under Installations, keep the test world in its own folder, and treat DXGI as a switch you turn on only if your Windows box actually benefits.
