Pegatron Locks In Apple’s Split iPhone 18 Calendar Amid Memory Crunch

Supplier Pegatron backs Apple’s plan for iPhone 18 Pro and Ultra in September 2026 while the standard model waits until spring 2027.

Apple supplier Pegatron on August 12 confirmed the standard iPhone 18 will not ship until the first quarter of 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and foldable iPhone Ultra still target September 2026. The shift ends more than a decade of simultaneous fall launches for the full flagship family.

Taiwan’s Economic Daily News reported the comments from Pegatron’s second-quarter earnings call. The move matches earlier signals from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and lens supplier Largan Precision, and it arrives as AI demand squeezes global DRAM supplies.

What Pegatron Told Investors

On the call, Pegatron said one major customer is changing its usual smartphone shipment schedule. According to the Economic Daily report, Pegatron indicated high-end Pro models still target September while the standard version moves to early 2027. The company will adjust production rolling with customer needs.

Pegatron is shifting more resources toward AI servers, where it expects more than tenfold growth this year. Phone volume may dip slightly this year because of memory and chip shortages, yet management said consumer electronics demand will not disappear; it simply waits for supply to catch up.

  • iPhone 18 Pro: September 2026
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: September 2026
  • iPhone Ultra foldable: September 2026
  • iPhone 18: March 2027
  • iPhone 18e: March 2027
  • iPhone Air 2: March 2027

Those six models match the timeline first laid out by supply-chain sources last year and now reinforced by multiple suppliers.

The Memory Crunch Forcing the Choice

Advanced packaging at TSMC cannot finish without the matching mobile DRAM. Semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan reported that Apple has around $1 billion worth of unpackaged processors sitting idle while it races to secure memory from Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung.

Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged “very significant constraints” and “limited flexibility in the supply chain” on the company’s July earnings call. AI server build-outs have absorbed the bulk of advanced DRAM and packaging capacity. Pegatron executives noted the dual shortage of memory and chips is forcing customers to make strategic choices, tilting critical components toward higher-margin Pro devices.

Memory snapshot

  • $1 billion in finished Apple wafers waiting on DRAM
  • Until 2028 before supply-demand balance likely returns, per Pegatron
  • 200 million lifetime units targeted across 18-series and Ultra, Ultra under 10 percent
  • Slight decline possible in overall smartphone shipments this year

Price hikes already appear likely across the new lineup. The Ultra is expected to open above $2,000, the most expensive iPhone ever.

How the Six-Model Lineup Now Splits

September becomes the premium window. March becomes the volume and value window. The standard iPhone 18 keeps a 6.3-inch display; the 18e stays at 6.1 inches. Neither is expected to bring major design changes.

Model Expected Window Role
iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max September 2026 High-margin flagships, A20 Pro on N2
iPhone Ultra September 2026 First foldable, limited volume
iPhone 18 March 2027 Volume standard
iPhone 18e March 2027 Entry / value
iPhone Air 2 March 2027 Thin / niche

Assemblers Foxconn, Pegatron and others will sequence capacity around the two peaks instead of one massive September ramp. Pegatron investor relations materials and the earnings discussion show the company already treating the phone schedule as flexible while it builds out AI server lines.

Why Apple Broke the Fall Ritual

Ming-Chi Kuo first detailed the split in 2025. He cited two drivers: closing the marketing gap left by Chinese brands that launch flagships in the first half of the year, and avoiding diluted campaigns once the lineup grows past five models. Manufacturing efficiency for six devices is the third practical reason.

The annual full-family September event has held since the iPhone 4S in 2011. Earlier Largan Precision chairman Lin En-ping told shareholders a major U.S. customer had pushed a new model to the first quarter of 2027, lifting expected fourth-quarter capacity utilization. That comment in June lined up with Kuo and with today’s Pegatron remarks.

Apple plans to split its flagship iPhone lineup between two launch windows annually.

Kuo wrote that assessment more than a year ago. The memory crunch simply made the split non-negotiable for 2026.

Buyers and the 18-Month Standard Cycle

Owners of the current iPhone 17 standard model now face roughly 18 months before a direct successor. That stretches longer than any recent base model and may surpass the old iPhone 4 lifespan as the longest-running standard flagship. Some on X noted the irony that the 17 could become the device people keep longest precisely because the next one arrives late.

Pro buyers get the newest silicon, cameras and the foldable option on the familiar fall timetable. Value and mid-tier shoppers wait. The spring window may also lift residual values on older base models through the holidays. Confusion is already visible: casual buyers see “iPhone 18” headlines about the Pro and assume the whole series has launched.

Apple’s recent March quarter iPhone revenue record showed strong demand for the 17 family even with supply limits. Extending that cycle for the base tier keeps the install base growing while Pro and Ultra capture the highest average selling prices under constrained component supply.

A New Rhythm Takes Hold

If the pattern sticks, future years will lock premium hardware to fall and volume hardware to spring. Kuo’s longer roadmap already sketched iPhone 19 Pro models and a second foldable in the second half of 2027, with the next standard wave following in early 2028. Manufacturing ramps become two smaller peaks rather than one logistics crunch. Marketing spends can target different buyer segments six months apart.

  1. September 2026, iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, Ultra debut
  2. Early 2027, iPhone 18, 18e, Air 2 arrive
  3. Second half 2027, next Pro generation and foldable 2
  4. Early 2028, next standard and value models

Suppliers gain steadier utilization. Apple gains a counter to Chinese H1 launches. Standard-model buyers trade annual novelty for a longer useful life of the phone they already own. The AI memory shortage made the choice urgent; the calendar change may outlast the shortage itself.

Pegatron’s call simply made the new schedule public and concrete.
