Motorcycle Reels Hid Honey Traps in Bengal JeM Probe

A 22-year-old Jharkhand woman known for motorcycle travel reels was arrested by Bengal’s Special Task Force for allegedly running honey-trap operations that fed a Pakistan-linked JeM module. Arpita Sarkar, picked up July 31 from Barharwa in Sahibganj, faces claims she helped boyfriend Mohammad Hamim Mondal collect details on political figures after handlers in Pakistan issued orders.

Sarkar holds an English Honours degree from BSK College. Mondal, a second-year dropout posing as an IT worker, had been tracking West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Their Instagram romance stretched nearly four years. The terror contacts, officers say, date only to the past few months.

That gap between a long public relationship and a short operational window sits at the heart of the case the STF is now building. The romance supplied trust and cover. The handlers, according to officers, supplied the tasks.

Arrest Trail Ran Through Chats and a Gated Complex

Mondal was taken from a rented flat in a Burdwan gated housing complex on July 30. Digital trails in his devices pointed straight to Sarkar. STF teams moved the next day, roughly 300 km away, and brought her to Bardhaman.

She was produced in a Burdwan court and remanded to STF custody for 13 days. Officers recovered Instagram chats between the pair that formed the core of the case against her.

Honeytrap Orders Reached a Minister’s Son

Sharma alleged Mondal drew Sarkar into the module. She then took instructions directly from Pakistani handlers. Her main assigned task, according to the IG, was honey-trapping the son of a Bengal minister in Howrah and gathering personal details on other influential figures.

“Arpita was fully aware of what she was doing,” Sharma said. Officers are still cracking encrypted chats and checking for foreign funding.

Investigators are verifying whether any of the collected information was meant for attack planning. Mondal had also been told to build a team and travel to Delhi for the students’ protest unrest, though officers have not yet confirmed he succeeded.

The task list mixed slow surveillance with faster sabotage aims. Tracking a chief minister’s unguarded locations is a long game. Procuring police uniforms for a protest action is a short one. Both, officers say, sat inside the same set of handler orders.

Four Handles and Encrypted Apps Kept Orders Flowing

Communication moved across WhatsApp, Telegram, Element X and Session. Four Pakistan-based handles flagged by the STF were Abir Jat333, Uzair, Rana and Hamad. Sharma said the handles are suspected to link to Pakistan’s Shahzad Bhatti gang. They spread fundamentalist propaganda, targeted youths for recruitment, and used SIM cards from Britain and Mexico.

A recent Delhi Police bust of Shahzad Bhatti modules had already shown the same network running arms trafficking and terror cells across Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Mondal was allegedly brought into the fold four to five months ago and told to expand it. Sarkar became one of his recruits.

The wider operation, per investigators, aimed to surveil VIPs, recruit new operatives and lay groundwork for terror activity inside Bengal. Multiple apps and foreign SIMs made the traffic harder to map in real time. That is why the device seizures in Burdwan mattered so much to the early phase of the case.

Online, Sarkar presented as an aspiring influencer posting motorcycle rides and travel clips. Villagers in Gwarkhol, Barharwa, told officers she was often away for long stretches at her maternal grandparents in Kolkata during college years, returning only sporadically. Crowd discussion on X quickly noted the contrast. Posts highlighted her Instagram bio lines such as “Dharma Rakshti Rakshit” and “Jai Shree Ram,” a short follow list that included Pakistani accounts, and the public Hindu imagery that sat beside alleged handler contact. The same platforms that rewarded travel content also let a long-running private relationship become an operational channel.

Older Honeytrap Playbooks Updated for Instagram

The method is not new. Pakistani handlers have long used social media romance and female operatives. In 2019 reporting documented how Indian soldiers honey-trapped on social media passed sensitive border information to fake accounts run from across the frontier. Earlier intelligence notes showed Pakistan terror groups use women to honey trap youths into militant ranks through multiple social networking accounts.

Nearly four years of Instagram contact gave Mondal and Sarkar a private channel long before any terror brief arrived. Officers say the handler link is only months old. The relationship itself is not. That mismatch is central to how the module allegedly worked.

Trust was already in place. So was a habit of shared messages, shared plans and shared silence toward outsiders. When Mondal was told to expand the network, Sarkar was a known quantity rather than a cold recruit.

Sharma’s account has Mondal drawing her in first, then handlers speaking to her directly. The romance did not have to be invented for the operation. It only had to be redirected. Instagram chats recovered after the Burdwan arrest are what let officers trace that turn.

The same thread that once carried a private relationship later carried tasking on a minister’s son and on other political names. That is the pipeline the STF says it has in hand.

Bengal Cities And A Jharkhand Town Made The Grid

The map of the case runs across two states and several urban pockets. Sarkar’s base was Barharwa in Sahibganj. Mondal’s family roots sat in Dirghanagar, East Burdwan, with a long Howrah chapter through his father Moniruddin since 1998. Recent months added a Burdwan township flat. Earlier stays put Mondal in New Town Kolkata near the CM residence area and in Pilkhana Howrah.

Each pin on that map had a use, according to the unfolding probe. New Town offered proximity for movement tracking. Howrah offered a setting for the alleged honey-trap of a minister’s son. Barharwa offered distance and a separate public identity built on travel content. The 300 km gap between the two arrest sites showed how wide the daily grid had become.

Sarkar’s college-era stays with maternal grandparents in Kolkata now draw fresh attention for the same reason. Long absences once looked like family visits. Officers are testing whether any of them overlap with the period when handler contact began. Geography alone proves nothing. Geography plus chat logs plus prior stays near sensitive sites is what the STF is stacking together.

Probe Still Hunting Funding, Full Contact List and Success Rate

Officers continue to examine whether foreign money reached the pair. They are mapping every VIP whose details were collected and every person who may have been approached. Mondal’s earlier New Town stay near the CM’s residential zone and his monitoring of day-to-day schedules remain active leads.

The family background is also under review. Mondal’s father Moniruddin had lived in Howrah’s Pilkhana for work since 1998 before the recent township move. Sarkar’s extended Kolkata visits during college years may yet yield more timeline matches.

Sharma has stressed the international links and national security stakes. Digital forensics on the encrypted apps will decide how far the module actually progressed beyond instructions. Success on the ground is still an open question. Orders to build a team and reach Delhi for protest unrest have not been matched, so far, with proof that either step was completed.
