Apple’s India Back to School Deal Brings Free AirPods After a Price Hike
Apple’s India Back to School sale offers free AirPods, an AirTag pack or Apple Pencil Pro with eligible Mac and iPad buys through August 27, 2026.
Apple kicked off its India Back to School sale on Thursday, offering a free AirPods 4 or AirTag four-pack with new Macs through August 27. iPad buyers get a free Apple Pencil Pro instead, and everyone can pay extra to trade up to a pricier pair of AirPods.
The bundle arrives weeks after Apple raised Mac and iPad prices worldwide over memory chip costs, and it skips the entry-level machines many Indian students would reach for first.
What India’s Back to School Bundle Actually Includes
The offer runs from July 16 to August 27, 2026, and covers college students, their parents and educators buying an eligible Mac or iPad, Apple said in a release announcing the promotion. Shoppers pick one complimentary accessory at checkout, with the option to upgrade to a different accessory for an added cost.
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro buyers default to a free AirPods 4 or an AirTag four-pack. iPad Air and iPad Pro buyers get a free Apple Pencil Pro. Both groups can pay extra to walk away with a nicer pair of AirPods instead, at prices well under normal retail cost.
| Eligible Purchase | Free Accessory | Paid Upgrade Options |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air or MacBook Pro | AirPods 4 or AirTag 4 Pack | AirPods 4 with ANC for Rs 5,000 (MRP Rs 17,900); AirPods Pro 3 for Rs 13,000 (MRP Rs 25,900) |
| iPad Air or iPad Pro | Apple Pencil Pro | AirTag 4 Pack or AirPods 4 for Rs 2,000 (MRP Rs 12,900); AirPods 4 with ANC for Rs 7,000; AirPods Pro 3 for Rs 15,000 (MRP Rs 25,900) |
That upgrade ladder sits on top of Apple’s standing instant education discount, 7 to 10 percent off for anyone with a valid school or college ID, worth Rs 6,000 to Rs 14,000 (roughly $70 to $160), stackable with bank offers.
Shoppers can add free engraving on eligible devices, but only when ordering through the Apple Store Online or the Apple Store app. Eligibility runs through UNiDAYS, either digitally or at a retail counter.
Last year’s India edition mirrored the US offer directly, with AirPods or Apple Pencil discounts and no AirTag option, according to Macworld’s rundown of the promotion. This year adds the AirTag choice and widens the paid upgrade menu.
Apple’s own marketing has quietly shifted toward calling this a College Student Offer rather than Back to School, since eligibility never extended to school-age kids, only university students, their parents and teaching staff.

A Price Hike Came First
This year’s promotion almost slipped. Apple raised prices across its Mac and iPad lineup earlier in 2026, pointing to higher DRAM and NAND memory costs. By early July, the company still hadn’t confirmed the Back to School offer would return at all, Cult of Mac reported.
The delay was real and measurable. The US edition of the sale has opened in June every year on record, including June 15 in 2020, June 17 in 2021, June 24 in 2022, June 5 in 2023, June 20 in 2024 and June 17 in 2025. Mid-July arrived in 2026 with still no announcement, an unusual gap that fed speculation the pricier memory market had squeezed the promotion out entirely, according to Macworld.
The silence broke on July 12, when Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman said Apple retail stores were installing Back to School displays and building a dedicated education table stocked with Macs and iPads. Three days later, the offer went live across Asia, India included, still without a confirmed date for the US, Canada or Europe.
Apple is separately expected to release a touchscreen MacBook Ultra with an OLED display and M6 Pro chip in early 2027, a timeline that gives budget-minded students one more reason to weigh buying now against waiting.
The Devices Left Out of the Deal
Apple’s cheapest and most specialized machines don’t qualify, a pattern that has now held for at least two years running.
- Mac mini and Mac Studio – both sit outside the promotion again, unchanged from 2025.
- MacBook Neo – Apple’s newest, lowest-priced laptop, left off because its starting price already undercuts the rest of the lineup.
- iPad mini and iPad (A16) – the entry tablets remain excluded, just as they were last year.
- iPhone and Apple Watch – neither device is part of the bundle, even though Apple added Apple Watch to its education store pricing only a few weeks earlier.
Together, the four exclusions cover Apple’s lowest starting prices in both the Mac and iPad lines.
Why Did India Get This Before the US?
India went live in the first wave, alongside China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, while the United States, Canada and Europe were still waiting as of publication. Apple typically times each region’s promotion to that market’s academic calendar, and Indian university admissions cluster through July and August.
The rollout order shifts from year to year. In previous cycles, Apple has opened the US, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, India and the UAE together before extending the offer to Europe weeks later. This year that order flipped, with a cluster of Asian markets, India among them, launching first while the US calendar slipped by close to a month.
India’s menu is also richer than some neighbors got. China, Singapore and Vietnam were limited to the AirTag four-pack alone, while Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan received an Apple gift card instead of a physical accessory. India was among the few markets offered the added AirPods choice.
India’s Bigger Bet for Apple
Apple has repeatedly called India one of its fastest-growing major markets, even as Android continues to dominate the country’s broader smartphone base. The company has leaned harder into retail expansion and local financing to pull in first-time buyers who might otherwise never consider a Mac or iPad.
The push goes beyond a seasonal freebie. Apple has also been shifting more iPhone assembly to India, giving the country a growing role in its supply chain alongside its retail ambitions.
Indian students weighing a tablet purchase this season have non-Apple options too. OnePlus just launched its Pad 4 with a 13,380mAh battery at Rs 59,999, well under what an iPad Pro costs even with education pricing applied.
Apple’s bet is that the bundle, modest next to a laptop’s price tag, keeps students buying Apple hardware through college and into their first jobs, when an iPhone or Apple Watch purchase often follows.
What’s Confirmed, What’s Still Open
Some pieces of this rollout are locked in. Others are still moving.
- Confirmed: India’s offer runs July 16 through August 27, 2026, with the accessory bundle detailed above and eligibility checked through UNiDAYS.
- Confirmed: The same wave of countries, including China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, went live alongside India.
- Confirmed: Mac mini, Mac Studio, MacBook Neo, iPad mini, iPad (A16), iPhone and Apple Watch are not part of the bundle.
- Unconfirmed: An exact launch date for the US, Canada or Europe, despite Gurman’s report of in-store preparations.
- Unconfirmed: Whether Apple will add the Mac mini or an entry-level iPad back into the promotion before the window closes.
- Unconfirmed: Whether India’s retail prices for Mac and iPad have shifted the way Apple’s global price list has, since the company has not detailed country-by-country changes.
Apple’s education store in India still listed the bundle as active through August 27 at the time of publication, with no changes announced since Thursday’s launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does Apple’s Back to School offer end in India?
The India promotion runs through August 27, 2026, after which the free-accessory bundle disappears, though Apple’s year-round education discount on Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and other products continues afterward.
Who qualifies for Apple’s education pricing in India?
Eligibility covers college students, their parents and educators, verified through UNiDAYS either online or at any Apple Retail Store, with no separate paperwork required once the UNiDAYS profile is confirmed.
Does the bundle include an iPhone or Apple Watch discount?
No. The accessory bundle applies only to Mac and iPad purchases. Apple Watch joined Apple’s education store pricing only a few weeks before this promotion, but it still sits outside this specific bundle.
Could the Mac mini or an entry-level iPad get added later?
Apple has left the Mac mini out of the promotion for a second straight year, a gap Macworld has linked to tight supply as AI developers snap up the machine for cheap local computing. Entry-level iPad models have swapped in and out of the offer in past cycles, so a mid-window change is possible but has not happened yet.
Has the Back to School sale started in the United States?
Not as of July 16, 2026. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported Apple retail stores were rearranging displays around a dedicated education table in mid-July, pointing to an imminent US launch, though Apple had not posted a start date when India’s offer went live.
