Ternus Bets His First Event on a $2,000 Fold
John Ternus’s first Apple event puts a $2,000 iPhone Duo on stage eight days into the job, with October sales and a stylus Samsung dropped.
John Ternus will take the Steve Jobs Theater stage on September 9 to sell a folding iPhone that starts at $2,000. Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” stream is listed for 10 a.m. Pacific, and you can watch a special Apple Event on the company’s site, the Apple TV app, or YouTube.
Mark Gurman says the phone is the iPhone Duo, not Fold or Ultra, and that it will not go on sale until October. That gap is the wager: a hardware engineer, eight days into the top job, is asking buyers to wait a month and pay foldable money for Apple’s first hinge.
Ternus Bets His First Event on a $2,000 Fold
Gurman wrote that Apple landed on the Duo name and a $2,000 starting price by eating the additional memory costs on the 256GB model. Higher capacities run to 2TB and roughly $3,000, which is where the company is passing the shortage through.
The internal target had been $1,999, a callback to the iPhone X opening at $999 in 2017, so the phone would sit under a round-number wall. Memory prices blew through that plan, and $2,199 was on the table before Apple chose to take the hit on the base SKU.
THE WAGER ON PAPER
- Starting price: $2,000 for 256GB, with Apple absorbing part of the memory spike on that tier.
- Top configuration: about $3,000 at 2TB, where the shortage is billed to the buyer.
- First sale window: as early as October, after the iPhone 18 Pro models.
- First-year volume: more than 10 million units, according to IDC senior research director Nabila Popal.
Popal called the passport-style Apple foldable a product for a very elite set of consumers and still expects it to be widely successful. IDC also says Apple’s arrival stops a double-digit drop in foldables, with the category up 12.6% this year and 18% next year, and with Apple at 40% of foldable shipments by 2027. Those are research-house figures, not Apple’s, and they only pay off if the hinge, the software, and the October ramp all hold.

Eight Days After the Handover at Apple Park
Apple said in April that Ternus takes over as chief executive on September 1, with Tim Cook moving to executive chairman after a unanimous board vote. Cook’s last day in the job was August 31. The September 9 keynote is eight days later.
Ternus joined the product design team in 2001, became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team in 2021. Cook’s newsroom note put 25 years of that work on the table and handed him a company whose fiscal 2025 revenue was more than $416 billion, up from $108 billion in fiscal 2011, with an installed base of more than 2.5 billion devices.
John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.
Tim Cook, Apple newsroom, April 20, 2026
Gurman has said Cook himself played a major role in the foldable’s development, so the object on stage is not a surprise Ternus smuggled in. What Ternus owns is the price, the name, the October gap, and the first public defense of a hinge Apple has never sold.
THE RUN-UP TO THE KEYNOTE
- April 20, 2026: Apple names Ternus as CEO effective September 1 and Cook as executive chairman.
- July 22, 2026: Samsung puts the Galaxy Z Fold 8 on sale at $1,899 for 256GB.
- September 1, 2026: Ternus starts; Cook’s title changes.
- September 9, 2026: “Surprise and Shine” begins at 10 a.m. Pacific at Apple Park.
- October 2026: Gurman says the Duo goes on sale as early as this month.
That calendar is why the event is a bet rather than a parade. Samsung has had seven years in the category, dating to 2019, and already has a short-and-wide fold in shops. Apple is showing its first one under a new chief executive and asking people to wait.
What the iPhone Duo Is Said to Carry
Gurman describes a short-and-wide book fold, the same family of shape as the Fold 8, built to sit in the hand like a passport when closed and open like a Magic Trackpad. Cover glass is a custom Corning mix. The hinge is titanium and aluminum, and it is magnetic. Inner display is 7.8 inches; the cover panel is 5.5 inches.
Inside: an A20 Pro chip and Apple’s C2 modem, two 48MP rear cameras, and a 12MP front camera meant for video calls. Software is the other half of the pitch, with side-by-side apps and iPad-style split view on the inner panel. Colors are white and dark blue. There is no black in the leak, which is a loud choice on a $2,000 object that will live in pockets next to midnight phones.
Apple is also said to believe the build is less tough than a regular iPhone and still the best construction in the foldable class, with software as the real gap over Android. That is the company’s view as relayed by Gurman, not a teardown.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The event: September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific, streamed from Apple Park, Ternus’s first launch as CEO.
- The rival on sale: Galaxy Z Fold 8, $1,899 for 256GB, launched July 22.
- The Gurman brief: Duo name, $2,000 start, 2TB near $3,000, Pencil, October, white and dark blue.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The official name: Apple has not said Duo, Ultra, or Fold.
- The shelf price: $2,000 is a leak, not a store listing.
- Day-one Pencil: Gurman now says support is in; he had previously said a smaller Pencil was tested and a launch was unlikely.
- AirPods 5: Gurman listed them among five things to watch; earlier notes had them slipping to 2027.
Until Ternus says the words on stage, Duo is a working name. The rest of the lineup is firmer only in the sense that Apple always puts Pro iPhones and new Watches on a September stage, and Gurman expects Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4 alongside iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
Samsung Already Sells a Fold at $1,899
The comparable phone is already in pockets. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 opened at $1,899 for 256GB, which puts Apple’s leaked start $101 higher before anyone adds storage. Samsung also sells a Fold 8 Ultra from $2,099. Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold has been listed at $1,899. Apple is not inventing a $2,000 foldable class; it is arriving late and trying to hold the floor on the cheapest Duo.
DUO VERSUS THE FOLD 8
| Item | iPhone Duo (Gurman) | Galaxy Z Fold 8 |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB start | $2,000 | $1,899 |
| On sale | October, earliest | July 22, 2026 |
| Inner display | 7.8-inch | 7.6-inch |
| Chip | A20 Pro | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 |
| Rear cameras | Two 48MP | Dual camera, 50MP class |
| Stylus | Apple Pencil | None (S Pen dropped after Fold 6) |
The panels in Apple’s phone still have to be built, and that foldable still depends on Samsung’s factory floor in the supply-chain reporting around this launch. If the Duo sells toward IDC’s 10 million, Samsung Display cashes the order even as Samsung Mobile loses the uncontested top of the category.
IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo has already described the wider market in harsher terms: the parts that make AI possible are the same ones in short supply, their cost is going straight to the shelf, and the era of the cheap smartphone has ended. That is the climate in which Apple chose to eat memory costs on a $2,000 fold instead of walking out above $2,199. It is also why a $101 gap over the Fold 8 is being treated inside Apple as close enough to live with.
A Stylus Samsung Stopped Offering
The one spec the Fold 8 cannot copy this cycle is a stylus. Samsung shipped S Pen support from the Fold 3 through the Fold 6, then dropped it on the Fold 7 to chase a thinner body, and the Fold 8 did not bring it back. Gurman now says the Duo has support for the Apple Pencil, which would make it the first iPhone that writes with Apple’s own pen.
That is a product argument, not a hobby feature. A 7.8-inch inner panel is a small tablet, and a tablet without a pen is a video slab. If Pencil input is real on day one, Apple is selling a note-taking and markup device that Samsung spent a year making thinner instead of more useful for ink. If it is a software flag that needs a later Pencil SKU, the October window gets less friendly.
WHAT APPLE IS COUNTING ON
- The hinge: a magnetic titanium-and-aluminum joint and custom Corning cover glass, pitched as class-leading even if it is weaker than a slab iPhone.
- The software: two apps at once and iPad-style multitasking on the inner display, the gap Apple thinks Android still has not closed.
- The pen: Apple Pencil on a phone, against a Fold 8 that no longer has an S Pen.
- The name: Duo, which stresses two screens and walks away from Ultra, a word the Pro phones already own.
Duo is a loaded word. Microsoft shipped a dual-screen Surface Duo that never became a default phone, and the nickname will attach itself whether Apple likes it or not. Ultra stuck in leaks for months because it sounded like a flagship; Duo sounds like a pair of panels. The company is betting buyers will hear two displays, not a dead Microsoft product.
White and dark blue, with no black, fits the same pattern. It makes the object look like a new category in photos and leaves the most common phone color off the first bill of materials. That is a design bet on a device that already asks for $2,000 and a month of patience.
Why the Volume iPhones Wait Until 2027
The foldable is the showpiece. The money is still in the phones people buy every September, and those phones have been carved up. Gurman says iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max come this week with camera upgrades and a $100 price rise versus the current Pros, a smaller jump than some cost models had implied. The standard iPhone 18, and the cheaper 18e or Air 2 follow-on, are due next year, with several briefings pointing at a spring slot.
Apple has in effect split the fall iPhone launch in two, putting the expensive models on the September stage and holding the volume SKUs for a second event. That is a bigger calendar change than a hinge. For more than a decade the September keynote was where the phone most people actually buy showed up. This year that phone is absent, and a $2,000 foldable is occupying the airtime.
Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4 are expected to fill the wearable slot. AirPods 5 remain a live question: Gurman put them on his list of five things to watch, and earlier reporting had them delayed to 2027. Either they appear as a supporting act, or Ternus’s first stage is iPhones, a fold, and watches, with no new earbuds to soften the bill.
A $100 Pro hike is modest next to a $2,000 Duo. It is also how Apple keeps the everyday upgrade path from colliding with the halo. Buyers who would never spend foldable money still get a new Pro in September. Buyers who want the hinge wait until October. Buyers who want a cheaper iPhone 18 wait until next year. The company is running three clocks at once and asking Ternus to explain all three in one sitting.
The Apple Store Went Dark Before the Keynote
Hours before 10 a.m. Pacific, the Apple online store was already showing a Be right back message while it made updates. That freeze is the usual pre-keynote swap, the moment SKUs, legal copy, and product photography load behind a closed storefront. It is not a launch. It is the last mechanical step before Ternus walks out.
If Gurman is right, the first folding iPhone of the Ternus years is named Duo, starts at $2,000, writes with Apple Pencil, and does not ship until October. If he is off, the name, the floor price, or the stylus will move on stage, and the October gap will be the number that remains. Pre-orders for the Pro phones are the piece of this week that still follows the old September script. The hinge is the piece that does not.
