Sensex Bounces on IT Buying as Jio Cash Stays Locked
The Sensex bounce on October 23 is IT buying on the Jio IPO’s last day, while Brent above $114 still caps the recovery.
The BSE Sensex rose 187.68 points, or 0.26%, to 73,437.07 in morning trade on October 23. The NSE Nifty added 11.10 points, or 0.05%, to 22,698.75, snapping a three-session fall.
The bid sat in IT names and Reliance Industries on the last day of the ₹30,213 crore ($3.19 billion) Jio Platforms IPO. Brent crude still held above $114 a barrel, and the Nifty was barely green.
A Modest Bounce on Thin Ground
Gains were small because the oil print did not move. Hitesh Tailor, technical research analyst at Choice Broking, said rising crude and West Asian tension could still cap the move even after a higher open.
FRIDAY MORNING SNAPSHOT
- Sensex: 73,437.07, up 187.68 points, or 0.26%, in morning trade.
- Nifty 50: 22,698.75, up 11.10 points, or 0.05%, almost unchanged.
- TCS: Up over 3%, the largest gain among Sensex members.
- Brent: Up nearly 1% to trade above $114 a barrel.
South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, and Shanghai’s SSE Composite were lower. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose. U.S. stocks had closed lower on October 22. The rupee rose 3 paise to 94.78 against the dollar in early trade, a small offset to the oil bill.
The tape was a large-cap IT bounce, not a broad bid. Tata Steel, Titan, Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, IndiGo, Mahindra & Mahindra, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, Maruti Suzuki India, Hindustan Unilever, and PowerGrid traded lower. Autos, metals, and ports still wore the oil cost.

TCS Jumps as Wall Street Sells AI
Tata Consultancy Services led the Sensex after an overnight slide in U.S. AI names. Nandish Shah, deputy vice president at HDFC Securities, said Meta Platforms fell 7%, Advanced Micro Devices more than 8%, Micron Technology 6%, and Nvidia 4%. Indian IT has been sold this year on the fear that AI eats billing. A night when those AI stocks fall is the night that trade flips.
Infosys, HCL Technologies, Larsen & Toubro, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharmaceuticals, ICICI Bank, Asian Paints, and ITC also traded higher. Reliance Industries, the parent of Jio Platforms, joined the bid on the IPO’s last session. Wipro added 2.21% in the same tape Shah was describing, with HCL Technologies up 1.47%.
SENSEX GAINERS AND LAGGARDS
- IT and telco bid: TCS up over 3%, with Infosys, HCL Technologies, and Bharti Airtel higher.
- Index heavyweights: Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, ITC, Asian Paints, and Sun Pharmaceuticals also rose.
- Oil-sensitive lag: Tata Steel, Titan, Adani Ports, IndiGo, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, and PowerGrid traded lower.
- The Nifty tell: A 0.05% Nifty rise against a 0.26% Sensex rise shows the bounce is concentrated, not broad.
Shah tied the IT bid to a higher U.S. inflation print and fresh doubt over AI spending, with U.S. Treasury yields still above 5% until the October 22 flight into bonds. That is a rotation, not a clean bill of health for Indian software demand. Infosys still has to speak after the bell.
The Jio IPO Still Has India’s Cash Locked
V.K. Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said funds returning after the Jio Platforms IPO allotment could support equities, with large caps likely to lead and small-cap weakness likely to last. That cash is not back yet. Bidding opened on October 21 and closes on October 23. Allotment is due on October 26. Share credit and refunds are due on October 27. Listing is due on October 28.
The issue is an entirely fresh sale of 27 crore shares in a band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119, or ₹30,213 crore at the top of the band. One lot is 12 shares, so the smallest bid is ₹13,428. The Jio Platforms red herring prospectus earmarks ₹27,500 crore, or 91.10%, to repay borrowings, and ₹2,688 crore for general corporate purposes. Google, Meta, KKR, and other existing holders own 33% and are not selling.
Anchor investors put in ₹8,109.85 crore on October 19, the same Monday the Sensex fell 876.37 points. Subscription figures as of 10:00 a.m. on October 23 showed the public book at 5.97 times, with institutions at 13.35 times, non-institutions at 7.25 times, and retail at 1.73 times. That money stays blocked until allotment. Friday’s bounce is not refund paper hitting the cash market.
JIO PLATFORMS IPO CALENDAR
- October 19, 2026: Anchor book takes ₹8,109.85 crore from 212 investors, and the Sensex falls 1.17%.
- October 21, 2026: Public bidding opens; the Nifty Smallcap 100 falls 2.37%.
- October 23, 2026: Bidding closes, with UPI mandates due by 7:00 p.m. IST.
- October 26, 2026: Basis of allotment is due.
- October 27, 2026: Refunds start and shares credit to demat.
- October 28, 2026: Shares are due to list on BSE and NSE.
Jio Platforms says it has 52.44 crore subscribers, including 26.85 crore on 5G, and that it carried about 60% of India’s wireless data traffic in FY26. Those operating facts explain why the book is covered. They do not put rupees back into TCS or Infosys on October 23.
Foreign Funds Sold ₹3,458.70 Crore on Thursday
Exchange data show foreign funds sold a net ₹3,458.70 crore of equities on October 22. They bought ₹13,627.54 crore and sold ₹17,086.24 crore. Domestic funds bought a net ₹2,891.32 crore, covering 83.6% of the foreign sale, and still left a combined hole of ₹567.38 crore.
THURSDAY INSTITUTIONAL FLOWS
| Group | Buy (₹ crore) | Sell (₹ crore) | Net (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|
| FII / FPI | 13,627.54 | 17,086.24 | -3,458.70 |
| DII | 16,242.83 | 13,351.51 | +2,891.32 |
| Combined | – | – | -567.38 |
Brent had jumped 4% on October 22 to $113.17 a barrel, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate up 2.39% to $99.47. By Friday morning the global benchmark was above $114. Vijayakumar called crude at $114 a major negative for the economy and for markets. He also pointed to easier U.S. bond yields and a firmer rupee as reasons foreign selling might slow. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell more than 17 basis points on October 22 to 4.972%, the first print below 5% since September 23 and the largest one-day drop since March 10, 2023. The 2-year yield fell more than 16 basis points to 4.659%, and the 30-year yield fell more than 14 basis points to 5.296%.
A one-day bond rally does not cancel a $114 oil bill. India still pays dollar prices for crude, and a 3-paise rise in the rupee to 94.78 only trims the edge. Mid-cap and small-cap names with thin margins get hit twice, once in costs and again in the multiple, before the squeeze shows up in quarterly profit. Upstream oil producers gain, but they are a small slice of the Sensex. The net effect of oil at this level is still a drag on the broader tape.
Indian equities are traded higher on Friday. However, rising crude oil prices amid West Asian tensions could limit the domestic market’s recovery despite the positive opening signal.

What the Three-Day Slide Did to Small Caps
The rebound followed three losing sessions, with Tuesday, October 20, a market holiday. From the October 16 close of 74,729.27, the Sensex lost 1,479.88 points through Thursday. The Nifty lost 458.50 points from 23,146.15 to 22,687.65. Smaller stocks fell harder on each of those days.
THE THREE-DAY FALL
| Session | Sensex close | Nifty 50 close | Nifty Midcap 100 | Nifty Smallcap 100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 19 | 73,852.90 (-1.17%) | 22,888.95 (-1.11%) | -1.09% | -1.01% |
| October 21 | 73,709.69 (-0.19%) | 22,811.35 (-0.34%) | -1.58% | -2.37% |
| October 22 | 73,249.39 (-0.62%) | 22,687.65 (-0.54%) | -0.87% | -1.14% |
Monday’s drop was the heaviest, and it landed on Jio’s anchor day. Wednesday’s close looked mild on the Sensex, down 143.21 points, or 0.19%, to 73,709.69, but the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 2.37% and the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 1.58%. Thursday added another 460.30 points of Sensex damage, or 0.62%, to 73,249.39, with the Nifty down 123.70 points, or 0.54%, to 22,687.65, and with small caps down another 1.14%.
That is the book Vijayakumar said could stay weak even if large caps find a bid. Friday’s 11.10-point Nifty rise does not repair a 2.37% small-cap session, and it does not bring back the cash sitting in IPO applications. The three-day slide and the IPO window ran together. Public bidding soaked rupees from October 21 through October 23, which is exactly when the cash market was already losing foreign money.
October 27 Is When the IPO Cash Returns
Geojit’s large-cap call is a calendar call. If the allotment holds, refunds are due on October 27, and unused bid money can rotate into listed shares. Vijayakumar expects that rotation to show up first in large caps. Small caps, in his view, stay soft. That split already matches the three-day tape, where the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 2.37% on October 21 while the Sensex lost 0.19%.
Until then the IPO is still a drain. Retail was only 1.73 times subscribed at 10:00 a.m. on October 23, so a lot of the blocked money sits with institutions and non-institutions that bid many times their quota. Unblocking that book is a next-week event. Treating Friday’s 187.68-point Sensex rise as proof the slide is over skips both the oil price and the IPO calendar.
Brent above $114 remains the ceiling Tailor flagged at the open. A firmer rupee and a 4.972% 10-year yield help at the margin. They do not rewrite an import bill priced in dollars. If crude stays this high for weeks, earnings cuts in the second half of FY27 become more likely, and foreign desks stay cautious. A move back toward $100 would ease that pressure. A few expensive sessions are manageable. A $114 regime is a different tape.
Infosys Results Land After the Bell
Infosys, the other IT bellwether in the morning bid, is due to report second-quarter results after the close for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. The company has set a press conference at 4:30 p.m. IST and an earnings call at 6:00 p.m. IST. The IT bounce on October 23 is, in part, a position ahead of that commentary, layered on the reverse-AI trade from overnight New York.
INFOSYS RESULTS TIMETABLE
- The print: Results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, due on October 23.
- Press conference: 4:30 p.m. IST, with a webcast of management comments.
- Earnings call: 6:00 p.m. IST, a conference call after the cash market has closed.
- The market test: Guidance and deal commentary, not the morning’s 0.05% Nifty rise.
Jio’s UPI mandate window also ends at 7:00 p.m. IST on October 23. By then the cash market will have a full session of oil, IT, and Reliance to digest, and Infosys will have spoken. The Sensex can hold a 187.68-point bounce in a single morning of TCS buying. It cannot, on that print alone, close the 1,479.88-point hole left by three down sessions, a $114 barrel, and an IPO that still has the bid money.
