BMW Puts a Dropped Turbo Script Back on the M2

BMW India opened first-come bookings for the limited M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, restoring reverse turbo lettering on an automatic all-wheel-drive coupe with no.

BMW India opened pre-orders at authorised Indian dealers on 13 October 2026 for the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, a limited Alpine White coupe with reversed turbo lettering. The 3.0-litre six makes 480 hp and BMW quotes 3.7 seconds to 100 km/h. Allocation is first-come, first-served. No price and no unit cap were published.

The car puts back a word BMW had to take off the original 2002 turbo, then sends the power through all four wheels and an automatic gearbox. The closer mechanical tribute already exists, and it is not this one.

Alpine White, Hand-Painted Stripes and a Cupholder Badge

Every Turbo Edition is finished in Alpine White. Hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes run with a black power dome, and the reversed turbo script sits on the bonnet so a driver ahead could still, in theory, read it in a mirror. A turbo emblem sits under the M2 badge. The roof, tailgate and rear spoiler are carbon fibre. Gold Bronze 19/20-inch M Performance forged wheels are optional.

WHAT THE TURBO EDITION ADDS

  • Paint and script: Alpine White only, with hand-painted Motorsport stripes, a black power dome and reversed turbo lettering on the bonnet.
  • Carbon pieces: A carbon-fibre roof, tailgate and rear spoiler, plus a turbo badge under the M2 name.
  • Cabin marks: M Carbon bucket seats, an M Alcantara steering wheel, carbon-fibre interior trim and a turbo plate in the centre cupholder cover.
  • Wheels: Optional 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Gold Bronze M Performance forged wheels.

Under the extras, BMW quotes 353 kW (480 hp) from the 3.0-litre inline six, 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, and a cap of 250 km/h, or 285 km/h with the M Driver’s Package. The company lists the M2 with M xDrive at the same 480 hp and a 3.7-second sprint, with 600 Nm and an eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox. The Turbo Edition is that car in tribute clothes, not a new engine.

The Lettering BMW Once Had to Drop

The 2002 turbo arrived at the 1973 Frankfurt show as Europe’s first series-production turbo petrol car, a 170 hp tii with a KKK turbocharger and a front dam that could carry “2002 turbo” written backwards. BMW of North America still describes those graphics as a message for the car being overtaken. Production cars did not keep them for long.

The original style of Motorsport stripes featured the word “turbo” in reverse on the front spoiler. This was designed so that drivers could see the word clearly in their rear-view mirror as the Turbo was quickly approaching. However, the German government considered this to be too outlandish and BMW was quickly pressured into changing to a different style without any kind of turbo script on the front spoiler.

BMW M Registry, E20 2002 Turbo FAQ

The Gurugram statement now calls that same reversed turbo script iconic and prints it on the M2’s bonnet. What 1974 road-safety politics stripped off a small Munich coupe is, in 2026, the detail that makes a limited Indian order form move.

The Tribute Sends Power to All Four Wheels

The 2002 turbo was rear-drive, left-hand drive only, and sold with a four-speed manual as standard and a five-speed as an option. It was light, laggy, and easy to unstick once the boost arrived. The India Turbo Edition is an M2 xDrive. Traction is the point of that hardware. BMW’s own India figures put the rear-drive M2 automatic at 4.0 seconds to 100 km/h; the xDrive car’s 3.7 seconds is 0.3 seconds quicker on the same 480 hp, because four tyres hook up off the line.

That gap is the tribute’s tell. The original car’s reputation was a sudden shove at the rear axle. This one is built to put the shove down. Buyers who want the 2002 story in the metal are paying for stripes, carbon and a cupholder plate on the all-wheel-drive M2 BMW is rolling out now, not for a return to that old balance.

Eight days before the Turbo Edition opened, BMW India began pre-orders for the 100 Jahre Nürburgring set, which already includes an M2 xDrive as the compact car in a five-model anniversary group with the M3, M4, M5, the first M5 Touring for India, and the M 1000 R. Two painted xDrive M2s in eight days is a lot of specialness for one chassis.

Manual Only, and Only in America

On 10 October 2025 at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, BMW of North America showed the 2026 M2 Turbo Design Edition, the same Alpine White idea with hand-painted Motorsport stripes, a black hood graphic and turbo in mirror writing. That car is rear-drive. It is also exclusively with a 6-speed manual.

The 2026 M2 Turbo Design Edition will be produced in extremely limited numbers starting in January of 2026. It will come very well-equipped and exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, with a base MSRP of $82,900 plus $1,175 destination and handling.

BMW of North America, 10 October 2025, Road Atlanta

US output is listed at 473 hp and 406 lb-ft, 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and 155 mph, or 177 mph with the M Driver’s Package. The 473 hp figure is the same 353 kW engine under a horsepower label rather than metric horsepower; India’s 480 hp is the PS number for that unit. The gearbox is the real split. America sold the homage with three pedals. India is selling it as an xDrive automatic.

Enthusiasts who posted the Design Edition through 2025 and 2026 lingered on the shifter, not the decals. A running wish was that BMW had instead built the old 2002 Hommage concept. Special paint is how the current M2 stays in the window as xDrive arrives, and the India car is the starkest version of that move: the graphics of a laggy rear-drive turbo, the hardware of a traction-first coupe.

How the Turbo Edition Stacks Up Against the M2 CS

If the question is speed and feel, BMW India already sold the harder car. The M2 CS arrived on 18 March 2026 as a limited CBU at Rs 1.66 crore ex-showroom, with 530 hp, rear-wheel drive, 3.8 seconds to 100 km/h and a 302 kmph top speed. That is 50 hp more than the 480 hp M2, on the rear axle, at a known sticker. The Turbo Edition has not been given one.

BMW India priced the updated M2 at INR 1,03,00,000 on 28 November 2024. The CS is the expensive, limited driver’s car in that table. The Turbo Edition is quicker to 100 km/h than the CS only because xDrive launches harder on 50 hp less. Anyone booking it for a Nürburgring story already had the CS, which set a 7:25.5 compact-car lap there. This order form is for the stripes.

1,672 Cars, a Fuel Crisis and a Parliament Row

BMW India’s own note frames the 2002 turbo as a car few expected in an oil crisis, with 170 hp and a top speed beyond 200 km/h. The production reality was smaller and stranger than the brochure language now used to sell the M2.

THE 2002 TURBO’S SHORT RUN

  1. July to December 1973: Twelve pre-production cars are built in Munich before series output starts.
  2. September 1973: The 2002 turbo debuts at the Frankfurt show as Europe’s first series-production turbo petrol car.
  3. January 1974 through July 1975: 1,660 production cars are built, all left-hand drive, for a total of 1,672 examples of the 2002 Turbo.
  4. Early production: The reversed turbo script is dropped after German officials call it too outlandish.
  5. 10 October 2025: BMW of North America shows the manual M2 Turbo Design Edition at Road Atlanta.
  6. 5 October 2026: BMW India opens pre-orders for 100 Jahre Nürburgring editions, including an M2 xDrive.
  7. 13 October 2026: BMW India opens Turbo Edition pre-orders on a first-come, first-served basis, still without a price or a count.

The 2002 turbo used a 1,990 cc four with a truck-derived KKK turbo, 6.9:1 compression, 170 hp at 5,800 rpm, and a 70-litre tank. All cars were left-hand drive because there was no room for a right-hand steering column next to the exhaust manifold. BMW of North America still quotes a run to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds for that car. The M2 Turbo Edition quotes 3.7 seconds and four driven wheels. The shared object is the word on the nose.

What the M2 Turbo Edition Costs in India

BMW India has not named a price, an Indian allocation, or a delivery month. Bookings are first-come, first-served through the dealer network, which leaves the scarce object in the hands of whoever logs the order first and whoever the dealer chooses to call back. The CS at least arrived with Rs 1.66 crore on the page. This one asks for a deposit against stripes.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The offer: Pre-orders opened on 13 October 2026 for a limited Alpine White M2 xDrive Turbo Edition.
  • The numbers BMW published: 353 kW (480 hp), 3.7 seconds to 100 km/h, 250 km/h, or 285 km/h with the M Driver’s Package.
  • The rule: Strictly limited volume, allocated first-come, first-served at authorised dealers.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • India price: No ex-showroom figure has been issued, and no options sheet has been published.
  • Unit cap: BMW has not said how many Turbo Editions India will get.
  • Gearbox on the order form: The India release does not name a transmission; the M2 xDrive BMW lists for sale uses the eight-speed automatic only.
  • Delivery timing: No start date for customer handover has been given.

A dealer can take a booking tomorrow and still not know what to invoice. Until BMW India names a price and a number, the Turbo Edition is a reservation for carbon, Gold Bronze wheels if you tick them, and a word painted backwards on the bonnet of an all-wheel-drive M2.
