Ramayana’s ₹9.23 Crore Advance Tests a ₹4,000 Crore Bet
Ramayana has taken ₹9.23 crore in November 5 pre-sales at 17% occupancy, a first test of Namit Malhotra’s ₹4,000 crore two-part wager.
Ramayana has taken ₹9.23 crore in opening-day advance sales, with 13 days left and occupancy at 17%. Tracker Sacnilk logged 1.62 lakh tickets across 4,245 shows as of 7:50 p.m. on October 23, every rupee of it for Thursday, November 5. Bookings opened on Dussehra, October 20, 16 days before release.
Producer Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus Studios has put both parts at about $500 million, over ₹4,000 crore, including the finish and the campaign. The first public read of that wager is a rupee total that premium seats are carrying while most regular shows still sit empty.
₹9.23 Crore, 13 Days Out, One Show Date
Sacnilk’s live board showed ₹9.23 crore in opening-day pre-sales including seats blocked by cinemas, and ₹7.09 crore without them, from 1.22 lakh confirmed tickets. Occupancy falls to 13% once those blocked seats come out. Hindi brought ₹8.18 crore, 89% of the gross, from 3,925 shows. Kannada added ₹79.21 lakh from 283 shows. One tracked show was housefull. None was fully sold.
Of 4,245 shows, 4,023 still had more than half their seats open, 95% of the inventory. Thirteen were almost full and 209 were filling. The board counted 515 cinemas in 128 cities and a gain of ₹1.07 crore since 6 a.m. on October 23. Night shows led money at ₹3.04 crore from 1,299 screenings. Morning shows filled a little faster, at 18% across 1,335.
The first 24 hours of advance booking had stood at ₹5.44 crore including blocks and ₹3.61 crore without, from 92,755 tickets at 3,533 shows. The gross including blocks is up about 70% from that first day. The unblocked figure is up about 96%. Tickets per show have moved from 26 to about 38 as sales outran the extra screenings.
OPENING-DAY PRE-SALES, FIRST 24 HOURS VS OCTOBER 23
| Checkpoint | Gross incl. blocks | Gross excl. blocks | Tickets incl. blocks | Shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | ₹5.44 cr | ₹3.61 cr | 92,755 | 3,533 |
| October 23, 7:50 p.m. | ₹9.23 cr | ₹7.09 cr | 1.62 lakh | 4,245 |
Trade analyst Nishit Shaw listed 40,000 tickets at national chains after those first 24 hours, behind Jawan at 155,000 and Pathaan at 117,000. That ranking folds films that sold closer to release into the same one-day bucket. Pathaan and Jawan had no tickets on sale 14 days out, and several southern circuits were still coming online when Ramayana’s chain figure was being ranked. Sacnilk still had only 20 Telugu 3D shows on the board on October 23, against 3,495 Hindi 3D shows.
The first six hours on October 20 put about 12,000 opening-day tickets through PVR INOX and Cinepolis, the number that started the week’s headlines. All of the later money is still Day 1. Weekend dates have not gone on sale.

Namit Malhotra Priced Both Parts Above ₹4,000 Crore
Malhotra has said he is funding the two films himself, and that the $500 million wrap-up covers part one and part two together. Yash, who plays Ravana and co-produces through Monster Mind Creations, told a Bengaluru event on October 15 that the ₹4,000 crore figure is for both movies and includes post-production and promotion. Director Nitesh Tiwari’s first film, with Ranbir Kapoor as Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita, is the slice now taking tickets. Part two is dated for Diwali 2027. The CBFC has given part one a U certificate at 3 hours 15 minutes.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala has been working from a reported ₹2,000 crore cost for part one, a different base from the two-part total Yash and Malhotra cite. On that part-one figure, Bala said India would need ₹75 to ₹100 crore in opening-day advance, and ₹150 to ₹200 crore in worldwide pre-sales, to create the kind of start the spend implies. He put an ideal India opening at ₹100 to ₹125 crore nett, with ₹175 to ₹200 crore gross worldwide on day one. Using a 2.5-times theatrical thumb rule on the same ₹2,000 crore, he called about ₹5,000 crore worldwide an indicative lifetime target, not a certified break-even, and noted that satellite and digital rights will carry part of the load.
Sacnilk has reported a ₹450 crore digital and satellite agreement with Star Group, with a JioHotstar pay-per-view window after the cinema run. Against a two-part cost above ₹4,000 crore, that deal is a slice. Dharma Productions is selling the Hindi belt. The film is due in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
Why IMAX Seats at ₹1,105 Fill First
Premium formats (IMAX, 4DX, Dolby, ICE, EPIQ) hold 31% of the gross from 7% of the shows. Hindi IMAX 3D has taken ₹2.17 crore from 19,167 tickets at an average of ₹1,105, across 137 shows. Regular Hindi 3D has taken ₹5.22 crore from 1.03 lakh tickets at ₹440, 57% of all money, across 3,495 shows. The IMAX ticket is about 2.5 times the regular 3D price, which is how a minority of screens can lift the rupee headline without filling the house.
DNEG, Malhotra’s visual-effects house, said in July 2025 that the two-part film was shot for IMAX. That pitch is showing up in the mix. Hindi 4DX 3D has added ₹30.31 lakh from 4,010 tickets at ₹788 across 105 shows. Kannada 3D has ₹62.12 lakh from 15,233 tickets. Telugu 3D remains a footnote at ₹14.83 lakh from 3,846 tickets.
FORMAT MIX ON OCTOBER 23, 7:50 P.M.
| Format | Gross | Tickets | Avg ticket | Shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hindi 3D | ₹5.22 cr | 1.03 lakh | ₹440 | 3,495 |
| Hindi IMAX 3D | ₹2.17 cr | 19,167 | ₹1,105 | 137 |
| Kannada 3D | ₹62.12 lakh | 15,233 | ₹420 | 267 |
| Hindi 4DX 3D | ₹30.31 lakh | 4,010 | ₹788 | 105 |
| Telugu 3D | ₹14.83 lakh | 3,846 | ₹372 | 20 |
In the first 24 hours, regular 3D occupancy was 13%, IMAX 3D 44%, 4DX 30% and Dolby Cinema 78% on nine shows. Recliner seats at PVR ICON in Mumbai’s Lower Parel have been listed at ₹3,170 for afternoon and evening shows on November 5, 6 and 7, and at ₹2,770 on Sunday. That is the other face of the same mix: a small run of very expensive seats, and a large run of ordinary 3D that has not filled.
The 60% Week-One Demand Slowed the Rollout
Full booking did not open cleanly on Dussehra. Distributors asked cinema owners for a fatter cut than Hindi tentpoles usually take, and several chains held back shows while the split was argued. Sacnilk recorded that on the morning of October 20 only a handful of sites, including INOX Korum Mall in Thane and AMB Cinemas Kapali in Bengaluru, were taking reservations.
PROPOSED DISTRIBUTOR SHARE VS THE USUAL CUT
- Week 1: 60% proposed, against a usual 52.5%.
- Week 2: 50% proposed, against a usual 45%.
- Week 3: 40% proposed, against a usual 37.5%.
The extra points in week one are where a film of this size does most of its cinema business, which is why owners pushed back. Sacnilk later tied the still-low show count to that delay, noting that Dhurandhar: The Revenge eventually put more than 9.50 lakh opening-day tickets across over 17,000 shows, a footprint Ramayana has not been given yet. Trade talk puts 3.5 lakh opening-day tickets across PVR INOX and Cinepolis as a solid pre-Diwali mark, and 5 lakh as the stretch, with the last week from around October 29 as the period when full schedules usually appear.
Hyderabad Is 66% Full on 68 Shows
Maharashtra leads money at ₹2.22 crore, 24% of the gross, at 15% occupancy across 1,017 shows. Delhi is next at ₹2.06 crore and 17% occupancy across 783 shows. Karnataka has ₹1.12 crore at 21% across 348 shows. Telangana has ₹58.10 lakh at 66% occupancy, on only 68 shows. Karnataka and Telangana together are about 18% of the ₹9.23 crore, well short of the 35 to 40% South share Bala said a ₹100 crore domestic advance would need.
National Capital Region is the top city at ₹2.06 crore, 22% of the total, at 17% occupancy. Mumbai has ₹1.54 crore at 15% across 646 shows. Bengaluru has ₹92.23 lakh at 24% across 229 shows. Hyderabad matches Telangana’s ₹58.10 lakh and 66% occupancy on those 68 shows. Pune has ₹43.48 lakh at 13%. In the first 24 hours Hyderabad was already at 61% on 37 shows and Bengaluru at 48% on 42, while NCR sat at 15% on 768 shows. The South pockets were filling on a small allotment. Hindi volume was coming from a much wider net that was still mostly empty.
Kannada is 9% of the gross. Bengaluru alone has ₹59.43 lakh of that, 75% of the Kannada total, with Mysuru at ₹7.73 lakh and Shivamogga at ₹4.31 lakh. Yash’s Ravana is a draw in Karnataka, and it is a concentrated one. Pushpa 2 remains the advance benchmark Bala cited, at ₹91.24 crore domestic, with ₹53.94 crore from the South. Ramayana is not in that neighbourhood on South money, and Tamil and Malayalam sales have barely begun.
Trade Wants ₹75 Crore in Advance by Opening Day
Sacnilk has been discussing a ₹70 crore India nett opening as an ambitious mark for a Thursday that is not a national holiday, with ₹60 crore described as a usable floor if the run holds into the festive stretch from November 9. Paid previews are planned for November 4, but those shows were not on sale as of October 23. Bala’s advance band sits higher than either window figure, because he is scaling to the part-one cost he is using, not to a pre-Diwali Thursday.
With its reported Rs 2,000 crore budget, Ramayana needs a massive opening. India advance bookings of Rs 75-100 crore and worldwide pre-sales of Rs 150-200 crore would create tremendous momentum.

THE BOOKING WINDOW
- October 20: Advance sales open on Dussehra, 16 days before release, with only a few cinemas live while the week-one share is still being fought.
- October 21: First 24 hours close at ₹5.44 crore including blocks from 92,755 tickets at 3,533 shows.
- October 23, 7:50 p.m.: The board reads ₹9.23 crore, 1.62 lakh tickets, 4,245 shows, 17% occupancy, still all for November 5.
- Around October 29: Full show grids at the big chains are expected to unlock for the last week of sales.
- November 4: Paid previews are planned, with bookings for those shows not yet open.
- November 5: Worldwide release, a Thursday before the main holiday stretch that Sacnilk dates from November 9.
Bala also said word of mouth will matter more here than it did for Pushpa, KGF or Baahubali, because the spend leaves less room for a soft hold. Overseas advance had reached $1.42 million across six countries by October 21, with 96,680 tickets sold, a separate pile from the India board and a reminder that Malhotra’s wager was always global. The India test in front of the audience is still the empty regular seat. As of 7:50 p.m. on October 23, 95% of the 4,245 tracked shows still had more than half their seats unsold.
