The iPhone Duo Arrives Friday With Almost No Walk-In Stock

Apple will put limited iPhone Duo units in stores Friday after online orders sold out, a squeeze built into the hinge.

Apple said Wednesday that stores will have only limited iPhone Duo units for walk-in buyers when the foldable goes on sale Friday, October 23. Online pre-orders sold out in minutes on October 16, and some new deliveries slid to January 25, 2027.

The squeeze is the product. Apple spent years on a tight hinge so its first foldable would close like an iPhone, then could not print that hinge at iPhone speed.

Limited Walk-In Stock Is All Apple Will Put on the Floor

A company spokesperson said retail teams still want people in the door on Friday morning, to try the Duo and the rest of the iPhone line. The same note made the inventory warning plain.

On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves. Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.

Apple also said the “extraordinary” pre-order rush means even that short stack should sell out fast. Checkout has been capping orders at two units per person, a hard ceiling that still left the online store with a late-January queue.

Some Apple Store staff had already been told to warn shoppers not to count on walking out with a Duo. Wednesday’s note is the public version of that warning, with a small number of phones set aside so the launch is not a glass box with a velvet rope.

Why the iPhone Duo Cannot Ramp Like a Standard iPhone

CEO John Ternus called the Duo the most transformational change to iPhone since the original, a foldable with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer display, both Super Retina XDR. Closed, the outer panel covers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the inner panel is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Peak outdoor brightness is 3,000 nits. The phone is eSIM-only, runs the A20 Pro chip, and is rated IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes.

That brief is why the line is thin. Apple says the inner display sits on high-strength glass with adhesives that slide like book pages, a titanium plate underneath, and a hinge made from more than 100 parts that holds the panel flat and snaps shut with a magnet array. The hinge cover is 3D-printed. The enclosure is grade 5 titanium. Colors are star white and night sky, with storage from 256GB to 2TB, starting at $1,999.

THE SUPPLY BIND

  • Finished yield: A person close to Foxconn’s chain in mid-September put assembly yield just over 60 percent, well short of a mature iPhone line.
  • The hinge: Apple specifies more than 100 parts plus a 3D-printed cover, a stack that has to close with almost no gap.
  • The price of waiting: Apple opened pre-orders anyway on October 16, then watched every U.S. configuration land on January 25, 2027.

Samsung and Huawei have been selling book-style foldables for years and still treat the hinge as a year-by-year lesson. Apple tried to skip that public learning curve. The cost is a launch that looks like a demo day.

Walk-In Rules Split the Launch Map in Two

The Friday rule is not one rule. A short list of countries gets a limited walk-in pile plus in-store pickup for people who already ordered. A longer list, heavy on Asia, gets pickup only. Macao is the odd case: walk-in only, still limited.

FRIDAY IPHONE DUO STORE RULES

Friday ruleMarkets
Limited walk-in plus online pickupUnited States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and some stores in Italy
Pickup reservation onlyMainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates
Walk-in only, limited stockMacao

In the pickup-only countries, Apple’s online store has been telling people to check back on Saturday, October 24, for a timed reservation, so it is unclear whether Friday itself offers a slot. Japan and South Korea also locked iPhone 18 Pro Max behind reservations, which is crowd control as much as Duo supply.

France sitting with China and India, while Germany and the United Kingdom still get walk-ins, is the tell that this map is a rationing tool. Apple is steering bodies away from the door in the markets where a launch-morning scrum is hardest to police.

Half an Hour Turned Launch Day Into January

Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific on October 16. The first buyers still have a shot at Friday delivery. Everyone after them watched the calendar fall through November and December, then off the year.

FROM PRE-ORDER TO FRIDAY

  1. September 9, 2026: Apple unveils iPhone Duo, with pre-orders set for October 16 and sales for October 23.
  2. October 16, 2026: Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific. Within about 30 minutes, every U.S. color and capacity shows a January 25, 2027 ship date.
  3. October 19 to 20, 2026: Some already-placed orders jump forward, a few in Japan all the way to launch week, while new orders still sit in late January.
  4. October 21, 2026: Apple says Friday walk-in stock will be limited and will vary by country.
  5. October 22, 2026: A crowd is already waiting at the Apple Store in Galaxy Macau, a day before doors.
  6. October 23, 2026: Sales begin. Twenty-eight more countries follow on October 30.

Apple’s own pre-order post went up as if this were a normal Friday.

The thread under that post filled with people who got into the store, then watched a December date land before lunch. The honest read is that the first-wave allocation was tiny, the site kept taking money, and the January stamp was the queue, not a glitch. A handful of later date bumps, mostly on orders already in the system, is Apple doing what it often does after a scare. It is not the same as restocking Christmas.

Six Million Foldables Was the 2026 Forecast

Counterpoint Research, before the pre-order mess, still had Apple taking a quarter of a small market on a short clock. That forecast now has to clear a 60 percent factory yield and a January backlog.

Counterpoint also said a full year of Duo sales could take Apple to about 40 percent of foldables in 2027. That is the domination story analysts sold in September. A 25 percent share on 6 million phones only works if Foxconn can raise yield and if January orders actually ship. Huawei already claims the book-style segment in China. Samsung still has the global foldable habit. Apple’s opening move is a $1,999 object most buyers cannot touch on Friday.

A Line Is Already Forming at Galaxy Macau

Macao is the one market Apple described as walk-in only, with limited inventory and no online pickup on launch day. On October 22, a crowd was already standing at the Apple Store in Galaxy Macau, more than a day before opening. That is the leftover pile becoming a camp-out, because it is the rare door that will sell a Duo to someone who did not win the October 16 sprint.

Neil Cybart, founder of Above Avalon, put the likely launch markup at a $700 to $2,000 resale premium, and figured some people will wait 15 to 30 hours if they can clear $50 an hour on the flip.

Given such limited supply, iPhone Duo pricing in the resale market will have a huge premium at launch. My estimate is anywhere from a $700 to $2,000 premium.

The two-unit cap and the pickup-only list are Apple’s answer to that math. They will not stop a Macao line that started on October 22. They will stop a lot of other cities from turning Friday into an unofficial auction.

The $1,999 Phone Arrives in a Shrinking Market

IDC’s preliminary tracker for the third quarter of 2026 put the wider context in one ugly row: global smartphone shipments fell 22.0 percent to 255.3 million, the steepest drop the firm has recorded for any quarter. Apple shipped 57.3 million iPhones, 22.4 percent of the market, down 4.0 percent from 59.7 million a year earlier. Samsung led by 0.5 million units at 57.8 million.

Nabila Popal, senior research director for worldwide devices at IDC, said the industry had been bracing for that downturn and that the bottom may not be in. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for worldwide devices, said the pain is moving from vendors to shoppers as higher prices hit the shelf.

Into that market Apple is sending a $1,999 foldable with Split View on iPhone for the first time, an under-display FaceTime camera, and a hinge it still cannot make in volume. Friday morning, the stores on the walk-in list will have a demo unit and a short stack. The pickup-only countries were told to check back on Saturday, October 24, for a reservation. The people who already paid on October 16 still get the first phones. Everyone else is buying a place in January.
